expire message choosing extend - now what

Seeing warning that AV in expiring in 4 days I press "extend" no what am I supposed to do - I just want to keep the free version the only option is the paid version. What am I supposed to do?

The only option isn't just the paid Version 'Select' the button to the left should also work 'Your current free protection.'

Did you try that option ?
I think it is very bad form to make this look like it isn't an active button/option.

There is only ONE selectable option on this screen for me 'Your current free protection' was the first thing I tried but if is not an active button. Maybe I have to wait until AFTER expiry before it changes to a "select" button as shown in https://support.avast.com/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus/ mentioned by @Asyn 

Not at all a clear design.

Thanks for the clarification I just used that method and it worked. That did exactly what I was trying to do with the "extend" button method which looks almost identical but does not have free option as a choice and is designed to waste my time.

Not at all a clear design.

That has worked for me in the past but it is very poorly designed (all options should be active and actually buttons), I have to wonder about its intentions.
