Getting "Host Unreachable" trying to update
« on: November 22, 2018, 03:45:51 AM »
I'm running Avast AV Free Prgram Version 18.7.2354 (build 18.7.4041.0), Virus Defs 181121-8.  Avast keeps telling me there is a new version, but every time I try to go out and do the Program Update to get the latest version I get "Host Unreachable".  The Defs Update says I'm up to date.  Have been trying to update for several days now.   Screenshot of error attached.

I went out to to Win7 Program/Features  and Avast only offers me Uninstall or Change.  Change only lists components I want to install, with no REPAIR option anywhere I can see.

I'm certain I have my Win7 Firewall set up right with rules, as I have successfully updated both definitions and program once previously (fairly new Avast Free user, having installed initially Oct. 28th).  I don't think the firewall is blocking the update process and my outbound rules are attached (inbound are the same set to allow)  What do you think has caused the updating to suddenly stop working?  What actions do you recommend I take next?

Hi
You could have a corrupted installation.
A 'Clean Install' often clears issues of this nature.

OK, I can certainly do that, but not eager to do it more than once.  But the program and definitions HAVE updated successfully in the past, so I don't think I have a corrupt install any more than I really think my FW is blocking your updater(s).

1)  Odd that this just started happening after a previous successful update (manual), so the FW rules as written WERE acceptable in the past.
2)  Odd that the screen shows a specific server number was reached, so I don't think my firewall is blocking the updater from getting to a server.  I've allowed "out" those files that appear to be needed for updating and then some, so let me know if there is a file I've not given permission "out" that needs access to the server.

I'll do the uninstall/reinstall steps as you suggest and certainly hope that resolves the issue.  Will report back my results and come back later in the month as well if a future program update causes a recurrence of the scenario of update events/error messages.

Somewhere in an old thread I found searching last night on the forums indicated that this issue has happened to numerous people before.  The Avast helper in that discussion said something to the effect that when the program updated to a new version new FW rule(s) might be necessary.  Why,  if rules already in place that allow updating just fine?  File name changes?  That would appear to be a SW design flaw if that is truly the case.  It would intimate this problem will recur every time Avast updates the program to a new version?

I certainly hope after I go through the uninstall/reinstall process, I don't see this issue again, because if this reoccurs, I'm going to think this issue really is a SW design flaw.  I'm just not willing to uninstall/reinstall every single time ASW updates to a new version and in that case, would have to find a different AV.

Thanks for your suggestion though,  and I'll keep my fingers crossed it solves the issue.

Well, I followed the on-line step-by-step instructions.  D/'d the clear tool and new copy of program.  Ran avastclear.exe in safe mode.  Rebooted and reinstalled.  Got setup log errors.  No success reinstalling, and I even turned off the FW during the install.

You see, although I said I was new to Avast, I'm really not.  When I ran Avast years ago I never had these issues.  What a great program it was back then. Never had trouble with installs; never had updating issues, on the defs or the program itself.  Since I've had this version running just under 1 month, with several issues, I just don't think the new program is as reliable as the one I used to use.  So thanks Avast team, but I don't think Avast is for me if all the FW rules I've already granted access to outbound/inbound, set up a new rule for the setup file itself and no luck.  Then I tried again turning off the Win7 FW completely during the install and got the same download errors in the setup log, I give up.  I think I'll have to find another AV.

Did you reboot 'after' installation completed?
I've found over the years that when dealing with security 'drivers' even a couple of reboots can be needed to settle everything in.
Just saying.

What do you mean by "Setup Low" errors ???
What operating system and version are you running ???
It certainly isn't necessary to turn off the firewall to do any of this. :)

I meant Setup Log errors, not Setup Low errors.  I finally figured this one out though.  I was doing something wrong in my Win7 Firewall rules.  I was setting up my Avast rules in/out to be ALLOW IF CONNECTION IS SAFE (made great sense to me)..........but apparently it needs to be ALLOW for the rules to allow access, in my case at least.  I just modified all my rules to use the plain old ALLOW option and BINGO, no more issues.  The rule syntax was also causing me issues with Malwarebytes, Dropbox and all kinds of things.  I knew it was the firewall but just couldn't see what was the problem.  Even retired teachers learn something everyday.  :)
