I have my Ransom Shield always set on 'Strict' and have had no problems.
One would have to see specific OS details and events analysis to confirm Avast was at issue.
Don't know :-\

Ultimately, prevention starts at home with regular image backups.:)

If you would have have ONE RANSOMWARE PROBLEM while using Avast!, probably you will not have been here anymore...

Usually people do not have TWO ransomware problems in their life.

You're correct. Many people prepare for a disaster before it actually happens.

We get it you have made that point multiple times in this thread, but prevention is not what this thread is about. 100TB of media content encrypted with Avast's Ransom Ware shield active in addition to encrypting Windows OS files that prevented a proper start up. The backup card is always being played after a disaster or failure and it should be part of regular maintenance and upkeep. But how do you handle 100TB of lost content with some of it being unique.

I feel for the OP and he seems to be savvy enough to handle his setup, that he had paid for Avast Premium and used it for some time tells you that he was not a Newb but actually aware of how to do online business.

I use a 'layered' security profile and have more then one security solution to cover every attack surface. I don't just use Avast. From my perspective that's the "prevention component" of my Security Strategy.
I use Image Backup for the "Cure" in the event of my Security profile gets compromised.
To date that has not happened however that's no guarantee it won't happen in the future....
With new attacks daily nothing is 100% in this game. :)

There's a good reason for having made the point numerous times. Most people don't listen till it's too late and then they cry. Usually the cry isn't "I should have listened to your advice". Usually its a complaint about either the fact that the infection wiped out everything and my AV didn't stop it or, that "damn" hard drive shouldn't have crashed already.
For me, this is now the start of the 10th year of doing presentations for Avast ( https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=78426.0 ) and getting the point about doing regular backups, is still stressed in each presentation. Most folks only start a regular backup regiment after they've suffered a loss.
It's your computer and your loss. Blaming your AV because you ran into a new infection may make you feel better but, it's not going to get your lost data back.

You still don't get it and regurgitate the backup bit and no 100% protection. WE KNOW AND AGREE WITH THAT. All your comments in this thread have been like that, of no help, unsympathetic and with no feeling for the loss that the OP experienced. The OP posted here to share his experience and highlight a flaw in Avast Premium, for which Avast should be grateful.

There is only one conclusion that can be drawn from your comments. "You are in damage control mode" for Avast. This was not a sophisticated attack with cutting edge Ransomware. When an application itself alters system files plus encrypts in one continuous go 100TB of content and the Avast protection ignores this, then Avast with it's marketing advertisement claim "Protection against Ransomware" is at best misleading. As a result you come to this thread and try to control the damage by saying "If you had backed it up you would be OK."

Not ones did you express sympathy for the loss that the OP experienced, not once did you acknowledge that Avast in this out of the norm action and process should have red flagged this activity instead you hide behind the no AV is 100%. We all know that and setup our systems and maintenance accordingly. This looks more like Avast's protection when dealing with Ransomware is very minimal.

Damage control ??? Bull. If sympathy would get his files back, it would have been the first and last part of my post.
At this point his only solution is to wait till a public key for his infection becomes available at which time he/she can restore the files currently encrypted.
Or, pay the requested ransome. Till then, start over. Life goes on and hopefully the experience will sink in the importance of being prepared.

I can tell you are really skilled in your bedside manners, NOT. You again miss the point and avoid engaging in the relevant points in these posts. Avast failed in behavior-based detection specifically aimed at ransomware behaviors. His files are gone he has come to grips with that but he still hurts, kind and comforting words go a long way to overcome this loss. If someone looses a loved one do you tell the survivors it was his fault he should have lived a more sensible lifestyle and not eating junk food and no exercise to go with it? Please enroll in Bedside Manners 101. In another forum he posts that he is well on his way to recovering his content. This is no longer about the OP but the product he used and for me after using Avast Internet Security from version 5 on for over 8 years, your excellent contributions have convinced me more then ever this is not the place to look for help and nor the product that I want to use once my license has expired.

Thank you for contributing to my welfare by ending my relationship with Avast. The price for 5 licenses that Avast charges is excessive and is a further reason to terminate my relationship.

Well I Myself Been Using Avast Free From like 2006 days,  I still believe it provides the best protection of any free product around,  doesn't affect system performance,  System Images are done monthly for household systems  as it's good to do to keep the machines backed up in case any disaster happens--whether it's hardware disaster, software disaster or god forbid Ransomware disaster accidently

Can't predict what will go wrong,  Avast provides the best protection its able to,   also depends on how safe and cautious users are using there computer systems, person behind the  keyboard also responsible for there own system security, maintenance, and updating of programs (including 3rd party programs)

I haven't had a serious infection since late 2005 before I switched to Avast with new system

Learned the following lessons since

Backup Backup Backup,  keep at least 2 copies if possible, one local and one off site in cloud storage
practice safe surfing
update all programs regularly
so far so good myself in terms of any infections or anything
Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1909 18363.476, Intel I7 7700 Nvidia Geforce 1050 16gb DDR4, WD 250GBSSD, 1tb Storage, Avast Free 19.8.2393
HP Omen Laptop Intel I7 7700HQ, 8gb Of Ram Windows 10 Home x64 1909 18363.476 128GB SSD, 1tb Storage, Avast Free 19.8.2393
