Avast passwords without Antivirus on Windows?
« on: December 05, 2018, 06:43:01 AM »
Hi all, I hate to ask a stupid question that has no doubt probably already been answered on these forums. But searching hasn't got me any closer to the answer, so here goes...

I run Avast on a few computers at home. Love it, and I've recommended it to friends and family.

At work I use a Windows laptop and my work has an SOE with an antivirus already installed. Everything I've read suggests that it's not wise to run two antivirus programs at the same time, so I'm hesitant to install Avast on my work laptop. But I really need the passwords functionality!

Is there any way to have Avast passwords without the antivirus? Would it be as simple as installing the whole suite and then turning off the antivirus portion?

Again, sorry if this has already been asked...

First, download Avast normally. Once it's done, (if on Windows,) type in the search bar, "Programs" and there should be a search result about managing programs. Scroll down until you find Avast. There should be two options, uninstall, and modify. Click on Modify. A box of options should appear, and you can untick everything you don't need, while keeping Passwords ticked on. This will effectively disable the Antivirus function, while keeping the Passwords function.

Sorry for the delayed reply, it's been a while since I checked on here. Thought I'd post back in case anyone else is looking for the same info.

Thanks for the suggestion @tpd1864blake. Actually, I noticed when I went to install Avast that there was an 'Options' button which allowed me to check which parts of Avast I wanted installed. I was able to uncheck everything except the passwords manager and it's currently installed and working fine. Thanks for your help!

That certainly puts a big load on your computer just to use the PW mgr.

I also have the same problem with a PC in my workplace on which I am only user and out of question even less to make an installation!

I find it really bad to have to install the program!

I have Avast for years on several other machines and they would only be enough that I have access to my passwords online ... Competition is better on this side!

PS: The backup solution is the installation of AVAST Passwords application on my smartphone that helped me out and allowed me to work around the problem.

Possibly, although it's a development machine so fairly specc'd out. I haven't noticed any issues with speed.

Why would it put a big load an his computer if he wasactually able to just install the password manager and not the antivirus part of Avast?

The Password Manager is part of the AV. You can't install the PW Mgr without installing Avast.

Ok, I guess his claim of being able to deselect everything but the Password Manager when installing is wrong then.
