Fraudulent charges for products that were never bought
« on: December 17, 2018, 11:22:35 PM »
I helped to pay for a friend's Avast security a couple of years ago. When they switched computers, they decided to switch to another service, so I cancelled the subscription, and closed the account. But I'm still periodically getting charged by Avast for unknown reasons, listed as DRI*AVAST software. Just in the last two days, I got charged three times for varying amounts. On 12/16/18 I was charged twice, once for $64.94US, and then once for $41.12US. Today, on 12/17/18, I got was charged again for $75.76US. This has been going on for a while, as I was also charged $54.11US on 09/10/18, $86.59US on 01/03/18, and $64.94US on 12/18/17.
Is there anyone I can talk to about this? I can't fill out the refund form because it requires an order number, but there is no order number because I didn't buy anything. I'm getting tired of seeing charges from Avast on my bank statements when I haven't been buying anything from them. I'm very tired of seeing Avast taking my money without me having bought anything. I'd like to have all of that money refunded, or at least the most recent three transactions if possible. If someone could PLEASE get in contact with me about these wrongful charges, I'd love to hear from them as quick as possible. I looked this up and apparently I'm not the only person that this problem has occurred with, either. There have been problems for other people as well, enough that someone dedicated a forum post on a complaints board about it, with plenty of other people bringing up their similar problems with the service and its charges.

Wow, this scenario sounds incredible.
That's a lot of charges continuously; I'd be interested in the explanation. ???

Sounds like auto renewals that are not properly cancelled.
That's why we need Avast to step in.

I have more charges from Avast going back longer than just the ones I listed, each one for different amounts, which doesn't make any sense. If it was from their auto-renewal system, shouldn't all of the payments be the same amount of money? Even if they're measuring by different currencies, I doubt the difference would be so different so quickly. Plus, multiple charges on the same day, of differing amounts? Something seems to be a little bit screwy there. A number of people on the complaints board accused Avast of running a scam, but I'd rather not do that without actual proof. On the other hand though, the fact that I've been charged different amounts every single time does make things seem a bit suspicious. I hope that someone will contact me about getting my money refunded, or at least reimbursed if it turned out to be someone in the company who stole my card number to use for themselves. I don't want to accuse anyone of theft, but that's definitely what the charges on my statements are making it seem like.

Hi Kokuyoku,

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you've had with unexpected charges being made from Avast. I've sent you an email concerning this now - as I can't find the payments from the email address you used to register on the forum, I need to ask you to for some further details. These details are going to contain personally identifiable information and shouldn't be posted here for privacy reasons. Please respond to the email with the information requested so that I can get this resolved as soon as possible for you.

I'm still getting charged even after cancelling the debit card I was using before. I need to get into contact with someone NOW. I'm sick and tired of this happening, and I want to get things figured out as soon as possible. I'm tired of these fraudulent charges continuing even after all the trouble that I've already gone through.

I did respond, and we tried to figure things out. Neither he nor Avast's distributor, Digital River, could do much though due to "data protection laws" getting in the way of fixing things. But if Avast somehow got hold of my Checking account number, I'm not going to take that excuse again. I'm sick and tired of this happening. This has been going on for a while, starting on at least the THIRD year that Avast has been charging me for products that I didn't agree to pay for. I don't care about Data Protection laws, I care about my money being TAKEN by Avast without my consent.

Something needs to be done, and it needs to be NOW. I cancelled my debit card so that I could be done with this, but according to my statement, I've got a BRAND NEW pending charge from Avast taking money from me, and I'm not going to have it. I don't care what I have to do to get my bank information purged from the system. I just want things figured out so I don't have to worry about all of this anymore. I want to figure out what's going on, and I want it STOPPED.

Hi kokuyoku,

I'm sorry that you are continuing to have issues with being charged. As we verified, the payments are being taken from the card under another customer's information. We cannot divulge that customer's information due to data protection laws, but you advised that you had purchased subscriptions previously on your card for other people, using their information for the transactions. As the transactions were made under their information, we cannot cancel them on your request - we need the request to come from the subscription holder.

Please speak to your card issuer to explain the situation and to report the transactions as unrecognized/unauthorized. Your card issuer can chargeback past transactions, and block future ones, which would resolve the situation. However, if they are not aware that there are recurring transactions on the original card, and they simply block the card and issue a new one, their systems can apply the recurring transactions made using the original card details to the new card. I can assure you that we do not have access to your checking account details.
