avast Pro Fails to detect Virus
« on: July 26, 2006, 01:47:16 AM »
I have a question involving avast's ability to detect viruses. I have avast Pro and just a couple of days back, another computer forum I was visiting was hit by a virus. As soon as I opened their website, I got a warning from Spy Sweeper in a pop up box by the system try that "Spy Communication Shield has blocked access to: zdfttygzjm.biz" Why didn't avast Pro pick up on this? Seems someone is falling down on the job.

From the description it sounds as though you have two (or more) resident shields active with SpySweeper and avast.

In those conditions one is going to get a look at the network stream before the other, if it is SpySweeper getting a first look and it stops the connection because it finds a problem then avast never gets to to report.

That's not to say that avast would detect this problem, but surely the true test would have been avast running without SpySweeper active.

You may have answered your own question as SpySweeper is a specialist anti-spyware program, whilst avast does pick up some spyware, spyware isn't a virus.

The fact that something (file name or location not mentioned) is connecting to zdfttygzjm.biz doesn't mean it is a virus or virus activity. I would also have though your firewall would have challenged any unauthorised outbound connection.

Incidentally the registrant contact email for that domain is in Rumania Russia although the address details are in the USA.

Edit: The registrant contact email for that domain is Russia.

I don't suppose it really matters as long as one of them catches this varmint!! >:( These people should be put on the rack for doing stupid things like this just because they can. That's what it's all about.
