Removal of external drive blocked
« on: January 07, 2019, 03:46:57 PM »
Since the Jan. 3, 2019 application update Ver. 191.2360 - build 191.4142.0 I am getting a message that a process is using my external drive when I try to remove it after a backup.

The application \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe with process id 1512 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\VID_1058&PID_0824\575845314141333136303938.

I have used the same drive and backup program for over a year and never had a problem safely removing it until after Jan. 3rd.

My backup program is Acronis True Image 2018 and my external drive is a WD My Passport (the drive device is set for Quick Removal)
My OS is Windows 7 SP1, 64-bit

Has anyone else had this problem?

Have the buffers had time to write the data to the drive. I haven't yet tried my backup regime this year - I use the same as you - and I do not know if anything has changed.

This happens several hours after my backup has finished. Also, to the best of my knowledge, I have the write buffer turned off on the external drive to enable Quick Removal.

I have also witnessed this behaviour on external HDD's. I think more so on WD My Passport than my Seagate drive. I have had to leave for hours to allow safe removal after backup is verified completed and the backup program closed.

Just suffered another case of Avast preventing release of USB HDD.
Got error message saying Windows found program still using it, when infact backup had been completed and closed for a while.
Disabed shields and was then advised I could safely remove.
Removed USB HDD, then re-enabled shields.
This procedure should not be necessary.

Reported to Avat. Let's see if that helps.
I personally haven't run into this problem.

I have a Western Digital WD Elements 2TB external portable drive that I use for image and system backups on my XP and Win10 systems and don't experience this.  Note only my win10 system is on Avast free 19.1.2360, the XP system is on avast 18.5.xxxx as in the info below my posts.

I just use the Safely Remove USB Drive in the system tray/notification area and it takes a few seconds.  I do leave it a little while to spin down and then remove it.  No corruption or errors experienced.

I would advise not disabling all shields, whilst this may work, it doesn't pin down which shield that has the interaction.  I would start with disabling the Behaviour Shield and see if that is the cause, if not, then try disabling the File System Shield.

Have either of you any change to the avast settings ?
If so it might be worth Restoring the factory settings.

In my case problem was with a Segate SRD0NF2 2TB Expansion Drive attached to my Win10 1809 machine. I used the UBS eject tool from system tray to safely remove but error message was quick to appear. Drive did not spin down. On disabling shields I was able to use that USB tray tool to safely remove the expansion disk.
Yes I have made some changes to Avast settings, but want to retain those.
I take the point to test by turning off shield one at a time, to attempt to isolate the culprit.

OK, try to isolate.

Note my win10 system is still on version 1803, I'm still waiting on it to be updated.  When I check it states I'm up to date (NOT).

Last night I had persistent problem ejecting my USB Expansion Disk, getting repeated error messages as per screenshot attached. I tried turning off invidivual Avast core shields one at a time to no effect. I ended up shutting down.

I have searched Microsoft forums and only advice is to run sfc /scannow, which resulted in no reported issues. Also to check for new USB driver, which reported I have latest.

I have since looked back at event viewer and see multiple reports like this:

The application \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe with process id 2816 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\VID_0BC2&PID_331A\MSFT30NA8EGE8F.

I also went back another day in the even log and saw more of these warnings corresponding to times when I was having problem ejecting the Expansion Disk.

Save your current Avast settings. > Next reset the settings to Default settings.
Now try the USB drive removal and see if the problem still exist. If this solves the problem,
you're problem is due to a settings change you made.
If you still have the problem, then it points to an Avast problem that needs to be addressed and you can restore the old settings you've saved.

Same problem here since the 19.1.2360 update  (windows 7  home 64bit)

"L’application System avec l’ID de processus 4 a arrêté le retrait ou l’éjection pour le périphérique USB\VID_174C&PID_5136\00000000000000000000. "

(when i checked what was  ID 4 process with process hacker i've found it was AvastSvc.exe)

I suppose what I could also try is a clean install of Avast, then restore my saved settings. I will report any findings.

Edit:
Well setting Avast to Default Settings had no effect. Still get the windows usb eject error and event log entry is same as my post above.
(Noticed I missed the screenshot from that earlier post but now added that)

Thanks bob.
FYI. I did complete clean install of Avast free yesterday.
Just tried removing expansion disk and got same result, see screenshot.
Also event log entry:
The application \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe with process id 2760 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\VID_0BC2&PID_331A\MSFT30NA8EGE8F.

I realise its the weekend. Hope devs can take a look after.
