Clean Install of Avast:
https://goo.gl/4Ptzkf
If you need additional help with the Clean Install, watch this:

Yes, a clean install of Avast Free v.19.1.2360 is the only way I can get this new version on ALL four of my Win 10 Pro PCs.

Upgrading from Avast Free v.18.8.2356 just does not work in many cases, as is shown in this forum.

More testing is required with the Avast Free v.19.1.2360 installer(s).
When you are that far out of date, updating isn't always advisable and in many instances fails.
IMHO, it's not the installer that needs to be fixed.

Sorry, can you explain? Avast Free v.18.8.2356 was released 15 Nov 2018.
Sorry, my error. I misread. There shouldn't be a problem to update from a 3 month old version.
When it does happen, the prudent fix is still to do a clean install.
I actually did an overinstall of the latest offline download and had no problems.

Well, for me I ran the offline overinstaller, which created a new registry key here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AvastUI.exe"="\"C:\\Program Files\\AVAST Software\\Avast\\AvLaunch.exe\" /gui"

in addition to the existing key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AvastUI.exe"="\"C:\\Program Files\\AVAST Software\\Avast\\AvLaunch.exe\" /gui"

so I end up with 2 instances in Startup items. That, is a bug in the installer! Just 1 issue I noted immediately, after updating.

bob3160 I'm going to take your advice and do the clean install. I downloaded the 334 Mb offline 19.1.4142.424 install and will see what happens.

I am also going to follow your recommendation and do a clean offline delete, clear, and reinstall as soon as time permits.

Post back on the forum if that takes care of the problem or not.
It could help others.

  Followed your instructions using the offline download after a control panel uninstall and avastclear and still have the same problem, "UI failed to load...........".  Any other recommendations?

bob3160  I did a clean install of ver 191.4142.424 About 5 hours later avast shut down for about three minutes and wouldn't restart and then it did a automatic program "update"  and it is now ver 191.2360 It DOWNDATED instead of updating, it went backwards on versions. Then about five minutes later it shut down for a minute and then restarted by itself.

19.1.2360 is the latest version, don't worry about 19.1.4140.x which is not a version number but a build number

The update I installed today also broke my installation...

There's multiple reports of this here today.

Time to cease distribution of this update and wake up the engineers!

Hi all, I'm trying to induce it: Avast free 18.8 installed and updated to 19.1, but UI works fine. Can anyone please collect logs: c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\ and send them to me ( petr.blatny@avast.com ). Thank you very much

I don't know how, but yesterday the problem was suddenly fixed by itself. UI has been working fine since.

this morning when I booted up the computer the UI Failed to load again so I did a repair. 5 minutes after the repair completed avast shut down again and the UI Failed to load again. So I am back where I started from not only with the UI failing to load at boot except now it's even worse since the update about five days ago avast is constantly shutting down and then failing to restart again over and over and over as many as six or more times a day.

Avast has a built-in program called AvastEmUpdate.exe which runs at every system boot and automatically fixes Avast related bugs or glitches.  Which is why one sometimes needs to boot more than one time while connected to the internet.  A second reboot while connected usually sets the fix in place.

A standard practice I use is to do a clean install anytime the Avast version number goes up by one, e.g., from version 18 to 19, using bob3160's clean install method.

Too many changes are made in the course of updating version 18 during the time it is supported for bug removal and glitches.  Version 19 is also an upgrade in protection abilities to protect against new malware, which is why it is being introduced vs. 18, but some old 18 files and registry entries can remain and affect proper operation of 19.  These duplicate files from version 18 and then 19 are not meant to remain but it does happen.  A clean install reduces the chances of a botched install of the new.

Some old files are not overwritten and replaced as they should be in an upgrade, as it were.

I always use the offline installer.  I've found to be more reliable and it works better than the online installer.   Plus, if I save the offline installer in a safe place, I can always safely revert to it in case the newer version fails to work out properly.

Online installers don't offer that option.
