virus chest problems

my virus chest has an error message that says the PRC commo has failed and will not start up.  How do I correct this problem?

Hey Wayne, go to start, control panel, add or remove programs. choose Avast, click on change/ remove, Then choose repair. ( you have to be on line for this).

What do you get if, after the reparation as marc posted, you run:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashChest.exe
