HDD usage when switching between screens
« on: January 17, 2019, 02:48:32 PM »
Hi!

I'm reporting a problem I've encountered and fixed, but it took me a while.

So I've noticed that whenever I'm in a full-screen mode, playing a game like Civ6 or watching videos on Youtube, switching to my second screen causes the PC to thrash the HDD for several seconds straight. Switching back causes this too.

Resource Monitor showed that svchost.exe (netsvcs) is doing this, and the target files are related to Windows Registry. Process Monitor narrowed it down to Windows Updates service. But why and what was happening was a mystery. Until today when I noticed that "Gaming mode task shecduler recovery" is causing this.

All this time it was Avast Gaming Mode (aka Do Not Disturb) enabling and disabling Windows Updates for every alt-tab to the second screen. I fixed the problem by going to Avast settings and switching off couple of checkboxes.

Hope this helps someone. Because the problem is clearly not documented well enough.
