Most effective way to speed up scans

I have the most thorough scan settings when i can my system drive which i am fine with

However whenever i periodically scan my entire system (all my drives) which have a lot of files it takes five hours or more.

So what is the best way to reduce this running time without making the avast scanner not effective; as in i want to balance speed with thoroughness?

Which options should i select or de-select; like "Scan whole file" and "scan all files" etc

For on demand scan u can set exceptions for some files such as .txt, .log, .ttf (font files), some graphics extensions such as .ico, .gif, etc. u can set exceptions for some pack files .rar, .zip (as Pondus wrote) anyway some viruses masked under two suffix for ex. eicar.com.txt choose wisely

I was hoping for a bit more of a technically response to be honest

I don't have any rar/zip files on my non system disk so i doubt that is the issue; nor would i want to simply skip-over files that could be infected

What about the "Scan whole file" and "scan all files" settings; which is slower vs faster and are they "90% as good" or only 25% as thorough"
