Thanks I'll do that

One things for sure, my Avast still works. It's just that the virus chest will not.

I found a "test virus" and every thing works but it does not have the choice to send the virus to the virus chest.

Troy, delete all the folder: <avast>\DATA\chest
And try again...  ;)

I made a mistake,

I went to http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm and tried all of their virus's some of them just said delete connection and another one did say put it into the virus chest. but when I tried to put in the virus chest I got the following error.

also, I removed the Virus Chest file in the Data folder as you said before the virus test and got the same error.

Hello,

Another update

I completely un-installed Avast using the un-install program, I then went through the computer myself looking for any residual files.

Then I installed an older version: Avast 4.6.652

This did not fix the Virus Chest

So as a result, I will use Avast anyway. If I get a Virus I will just delete it.

In the future if Avast causes any problems for me I'll just get a different Anti-virus program.

If anybody has any idea's as to how to fix my Virus Chest just let me know and I'll try it.

Thanks for all your help

Well you also have a move/rename and repair (if the infected file is one that can be repaired) options, see example image. These are preferable to deletion, they at least give you options and time to investigate. With the move option you have to make a not of where it was located as the move folder is outside the chest, so if you need to move it back you have to know where to send it.

Hello,

I was just looking in the folder: Avast4\DATA\log\Error.log and found the following.

Can anybody decipher this?

Error in aswChestC: chestOpenList Error 1753.
aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::LoadFiles() chestOpenList() failed: 2147422219.
aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::OnCreate() !m_strErrorWnd.IsEmpty().
Internal error has occurred in module ChestS, function chestStart.

Please change loging level to 'Info' in avast settings, restart the 'avast! Antivirus' service and post contents of 'Info.log'.

Hi Troy,
I had the same problem as u described
''Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.'' and it's being solved by simply right click 'my computer' => manage=> service and application=> service=>In the right column, look at the state of services avast! Antivirus and Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
If any of these services is not set to start automatically, set it that way (right-click it and select PROPERTIES and set STARTUP TYPE to AUTOMATIC). And the 'status' has to be 'started'.
Restart the computer.   : )
Try that way if it helps~~~~

Thanks for your help qzhang86,

Everthing in my services.msc folder concerning Avast and RPC was set correctly as you said, except the mail and web scanners were set to start manually, so i set them to start automatically.

Then I restarted the computer and it did not fix the problem, thanks anyway.

Those two services are meant to start manually by default, this is I suppose because if you aren't using the Web Shield or Internet mail providers you don't want them started automatically. If you are using the two providers then the service will be started and the two providers then started.
