Can't run Full Scan.  If I choose "Protection" then "Virus Scans" I can only choose "RUN SMART SCAN" or create a Custom Scan.
Do Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

I think I found the solution after WAY TOO MUCH time on this problem, which should not have been a problem to begin with.

If you hover over "Run Smart Scan" under "Custom Scan," to the far right are three vertical dots.  Left click on those dots for a pull-down menu and select Settings.

From there, you can change the "scan name" to whatever you want it to be.

Then click on "scan type" and select "Full Virus Scan."

Set your frequency and time, and any of the other options to your preference.

Click "Back" at the top left, and you should now have a full custom scan set up as a daily scan (or your frequency of choice).

To test if the "Smart Scan" would show up again as a relentless default, I disabled Avast by unchecking "Enable Self-Defense" and then ended the Avast process via Task Manager.  I then restarted Avast, and my "Full Virus Scan" remained exactly as I set it up to be.  I then re-enabled "Enable Self-Defense" again.

I have not rebooted my system (which I will do in the morning), to see if the settings stay put as I set them, or if that single "Full Virus Scan" custom scan reverts back to "Smart Scan" as a relentless default.

If it does revert back, I will post again.  But for now, the full daily scan kicked in as it was supposed to, as I set it up an hour before the full virus scan time "I" wanted it to scan at.

FYI:  If you check under the main window of "Virus Scans" while the scan is running, you will see that the Custom Scan to the far right is active while the scan is in progress.  The "Full Virus Scan" option to the far left will not show activity as it used to be in previous versions.

What would you expect to find in a support forum.

Those who aren't having any problems are hardly going to register/logon to say they aren't having any problems.  When there are many millions of avast users, with innumerable different programs/OSes/setups, then you are likely to see some issues.

Which sort of makes my point, you didn't have any problems and yet here you are (complaining about problems in the new version) not having updated to the latest version (the beta is closed).

@ -Midnight,
The only way to get off the beta version is to do a clean install.

If your Avast settings are not the default settings and you want them restored after the Clean Install, follow this before removing Avast.

Bob, under Custom Scan, there is initially a single default option that appears named "Run Smart Scan."  That is the name input by the program of that one initial Custom Scan that the program sets up.

By selecting the settings for that single default CUSTOM SCAN (Run Smart Scan), various things can be changed to become a Full Virus Scan, as I originally detailed.

So now I no longer have one Custom Scan named "Run Smart Scan" (that I didn't put there).  I now have the daily Full Virus Scan that I have wanted, and have control over once again.  I no longer have any (default) Custom Scan named "Run Smart Scan."

My settings stayed intact when I turned on the computer this morning, and my daily Full Scan kicked in like it's supposed to, just as I set it up.

So, yes, "under Custom Scan," changing the settings of what the program sets up automatically as the single Custom Scan (Smart Scan), works perfectly, and it's running like clockwork as I type this post.

Well, while I now have the daily Full Virus Scan setting that I want (as I previously laid out how to get it), the "old time" of the daily full virus scan setting from two versions ago still exists.

Two hours after "my" preferred time ran the daily scan, the "old and no longer wanted" time kicked in.

So, right now, I am forced to keep the Full Virus Scan at the time I set up, but then I have to cancel the Full Virus Scan that runs two hours later because the latest version did not erase what once was, if my computer is still on.

Very frustrating.  I want the "old" scan time setting GONE GONE GONE.  But there is no way to achieve that because it remains hidden in the dark untouchable recesses of the program.

Preventing access to an old time setting makes no sense at all.  When something works, why break it?

  • Collateral damage.  They are also under developmental pressure to bring the latest version out with newest protection features users need in the least amount of time.
  • Because Avast, like all other a/v's out there, have to keep up with the latest malware exploits and threats, some bugs are going to be introduced where none was intended.
  • Bad actors never rest.
