NEW Version: 19.2.2364 BSOD
« on: February 06, 2019, 11:43:05 PM »
Hi Avast

not sure what info you need so could someone please advise.

back story.
gaming Clevo laptop which is roughly 7 years old. win 7 pro SP1 64bit
avast premier with just over 1 year licence before renewal.

my laptop has never had any issues since the day i bought it almost 7 years ago.
today has been the first ever BSOD and only since the latest 19.2.2364 build 19.2.4186.404 update.

opened avast to run a regular full scan. showed there was an update to load so i let it update. restart popup as always and after a restart bang, bsod and only way to carry on was a hard turn off.

downloaded who crashed and these were the dump reports:

Quote
On Wed 06-Feb-19 9:52:51 PM your computer crashed or a problem was reported
crash dump file: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP
This was probably caused by the following module: aswnetsec.sys (aswNetSec+0x3F9F9)
Bugcheck code: 0x7F (0x8, 0x80050033, 0x506F8, 0xFFFFF800033061D1)
Error: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aswnetsec.sys
product: Avast Antivirus
company: AVAST Software
description: Avast Firewall Driver
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the Intel CPU generated a trap and the kernel failed to catch this trap.Double Fault, indicates that an exception occurs during a call to the handler for a prior exception. Most often this is caused by a software problem (kernel stack overflow) but this can also be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: aswnetsec.sys (Avast Firewall Driver, AVAST Software).

The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

this happened 3 times so i rolled back 2 days with a system restore.
avast is still showing the latest version though.

since the first crash a few hours ago i can now no longer open (dont shout at me) nord vpn. up until this latest avast update it has opened and picked a server on startup without issues. now every time it opens it black screens and i have to hard turn off again. the latest dump reports above are after the latest black screen.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using Vypr VPN, and the BSOD happens also for me (stop error 0x7F), exactly when Vypr VPN begins to connect to its VPN server.  I initiated the Avast update myself, updating to program version 19.2.2364 (build 19.2.4186.404), and the VPN connecting immediately crashed my Windows (64-bit Win7 Pro).  My VPN installation was broken by the crash, so I cleanly reinstalled it; and again got the same BSOD at the moment VPN nearly successfully connected.

Would be nice to rollback the Avast version to continue using my VPN, but I guess I have to wait and hope this gets fixed.  Sadly, I recently terminated my Malwarebytes Premium subscription of several years due to a similar ruination of Windows (hard-freezing rather than crash.. similar to a recent conflict with Avast's RealSite component), and their support never fixed it nor acknowledged it - Hard to find a safe harbor with security software.

id be interested in how to roll back to the previous version.

download Who Crashed mate and keep a screenshot of all the dump reports.

run this tool https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/33/ and then post up the file ID but then weve got to wait for someone to forward it to support.
i tried to go on live chat earlier and after typing it all out it just kept trying to send but went nowhere. i emailed them in the end.
not been able to use vpn since last night.

I uninstalled just the firewall component of Avast, and that stopped the Windows crashes.  Permanently "turning off" the firewall wasn't enough - it still crashed even then.  But uninstalling the firewall component (and ensuring the generic Windows Firewall is instead turned on) puts me in a good state to await a later fix / update.  The "WhoCrashed" report had already suggested that a driver for the Avast firewall caused the crash (for my environment, probably various VPN services being handled by Avast firewall ... even when you've told Avast firewall not to be "on", i.e. observe or handle internet traffic).  So that guided me to try this.

Hi All, we identified wrong interaction with OpenVPN driver which causes BSOD UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. So, please could you tell me if do you have OpenVPN instaled?

Nord, as well as many other VPNs use OpenVPN as the base of their product sort to speak.

I have the same issue as described with my VPN that used OpenVPN as the base.
