Can't connect

Have not had this problem before but my MacBook Air cannot connect to the server today.... have tried numerous times?  I read some things about what to try but they only seem to address this as a standalone product saying that if it's through the Avast Anti-Virus it is installed automatically so the instructions to uninstall and reinstall don't work.  Is there something wrong with the server?  What can I do to try to fix this.  It keeps trying to connect but has not been successful for several hours.  Thanks for any advice.
