Avast eating CPU when downloading
« on: February 10, 2019, 11:50:58 PM »
Hello

I have a problem and I thought noticed that I'm not alone with this problem.
When I'm downloading (especially with Steam and Origin) Avast analyses all the data and explodes my CPU counter.
I already tried to add Steam in Avast exception's but it didn't worked.
How can I deactivate the web agent for Steam and Origin downloads?

Thank you for your help and sorry if my english make your eyes to bleed.

Thank you to answer so fast  :)

I use free Avast in Windows 10 Pro (so with Windows Defender too) and from the beginning I use Avast.
I discovered this problem when I got a fibre connexion, before it was too slow to be notable, now Avast uses all the power of the CPU and tortures my computer.
The first link you send me can be a solution, but I suppose it will impacts the others Avast processes, is there a way to only deactivate the web agent for specific applications?
And I don't understand the purpose of your second link  :-\

Anyway thank you again for helping me  ;D

No need to disable webshield. You can add the process of origin and Steam in web shield exclusions:
It is still available via Menu>Settings>Troubleshooting>Open old settings>components>webshield>exclusions>Processes to exclude

I tried to add Steam in the Avast exceptions but it continues to uses most of my CPU  :-\
And if I limit the Avast CPU usage will it restrains my connexion speed because of the slowness of Avast to analyse?

Hello,

Thank you for reporting the issue.
Could you please help us with investigation by providing some data?

Please enable debug logging (Settings > Troubleshooting > Enable debug logging)
Reproduce the issue.
When the CPU load is high, dump the Avast process consuming the CPU. (Windows Task manager > Details tab > right click on the process > Create dump file)
Upload the dump to our FTP (https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/FTP-file-upload).
Create a support package (https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Submit-support-file) and post the ID here.

Thank you very much,
Filip

Hello,

I activated the debug logging, but when I tried to create a dump file I have an access denied, even if I start the task manager in administrator :/

Thank you again for helping me ^^

Who's "Access Denied"?

Is it Windows or Avast or some other program?
Windows 10 Home 64-bit 22H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.1.6099 (build 24.1.88821.762)  UI version 1.0.797
 UI version 1.0.788.  Windows 11 Home 23H2 - Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.2.6105 (build 24.1.8918.827) UI version 1.0.801

You can try turning off File Shield.
It should solve the access denied issue, but it might also remove the problem with CPU load, since it might be File Shield causing it.
Lets hope the issue with CPU is not in File Shield :)

Please check is Avast Self-defense (Settings > Troubleshooting) is OFF.
If not, turn it OFF please and remember to turn it back ON after.

Sorry, I forgot to mention this earlier.
