What is "Antivirus Engine Server"?

Hello! I have an Avast process called "Antivirus Engine Server" (aswEngSrv.exe). What is the function of this process?

Presumably one would trust all processes identified as Avast s.r.o as trustworthy?  Or not?

I would imaging that this file would also be digitally signed by Avast.
