Buffer overrun deteted during install
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:16:21 PM »
I'v been using Avast with no problems for several months now, but I recently had to switch hard-drives (old one failed) and now when re-installing I get a buffer-overrun detected error.
This is a totally clean system, I've done nothing more than install Windows and download the updates - is there some default setting I need to change?

Can you please post a screenshot of the error message you're getting?

Thanks

I don't know of any way of doing so .... right click does nothing and I can't drag it into paint, just overrides the window.

I'm not new to computers, just problems I can't solve on my own.

    The blue strip says:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Libary

then:

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: ...in\LOCALS~1\Temp\_av_sfx.tm~a01452\avast.setup

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

All I can do is click okay, or right click and close the window ((alt f4).

This is a fresh install of Windows - all I have running is my Logitech keyboard and mouse drivers.

For the future, you can press the Print Screen key and paste that into Paint (or image editing tool), crop the bit you need. You can also press the Alt+Print Screen keys together and that copies the active window.

Has anyone resolved this issue? I, too have a buffer over run on a clean install of MS Media version. (Hard Drive had failed)
Here are the error codes:
Buffer over run
Can't Install VPS update. Please report following error codes:
Ver:4.7.1043
St:0x00000005
St:0x00000003
LE:0x00000000.

My Outlook 2000 start with:

The add in "C:\Program Files\Alwl Software\Avast4\ashOutXL.dll"
could not be installed or loaded. This may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the help menu.

I ran the repair and detect twice, with a fresh reboot each time. Still no luck and Avast will not let me remove the program
due to the buffer over run, nor will it update or reinstall.

 ::Update::
I did a Manuel search of my registry and delete all "Avast" entrees and did a fresh reinstall of Avast and all is well now. The only thing that I have noticed is the real time scan of my in comming email in Outlook 2000, it is ,,, now differant. It use to be pop up notices, now it just says it is running, via Taskmanager.

Is any other antivirus installed? Did you have any in the past?
Maybe you can search for ashOutXL.dll in this board and you'll find some info.
Error 5 means access denied. Are you the Administrator of this computer or a common user?

Welcome to the forums, Rastus.

Also ...

Error 3 = The system cannot find the path specified.

Error 0 = The operation completed successfully.

Have you tried uninstalling avast, boot, re-install avast, boot?

Thanks to all that replied to my request for help. I did a registry edit for Avast entries and deleted those entries, then did a reboot, reinstalled Avast, did the updates - both program and virus definitions and it is now working okay. I have noticed that Avast handles my email scanning differant now. It is more "Stealthie".
Thanks for the quick replies - Rastus
