As per title, I want to disable the pop-up that appears when you download any file. I believe this falls under 'web scanning'. I find it rather intrusive, not to mention unnecessary, especially when the scan result is free of viruses. Any idea on how to do this? I saw silent mode, but it implies that I won't get notified if any virus actually does come through.

Kind regards,

Jimmy.

What version of avast and avast build are you running?

Kindly attach a screenshot of said popup so we can see.  I've not seen such behavior on any systems here.

My apologies for forgetting the basic information...first screen shot is my avast details and the second is the window I see after I download anything. I just realised that it's simply the main avast screen that you would get if you opened avast.

How did you update to version 19.4?

Did you:
  • Automatically update (while online)?
  • Install the standalone 19.4 file on top of the old version?
  • Do a clean install?
How you updated will dictate recommended actions.

You shouldn't see the main avast window pop-up whenever you download a file unless you invoke windows explorer scanning.

Do a repair of avast:  https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/204/

I'd also get a fresh copy of avast version here and save it for safekeeping:  https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=226462.0

Use this to do a clean install of avast if repair fails to work properly:  https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Uninstall-Antivirus-Utility

NOTE:  If you've custom settings or configurations, backup those settings before you do a clean install.  A clean install resets every setting back to default.

--->I prefer to always do a clean install rather than use the automatic or online update options, or, download the standalone file and install over the top of the older version.

Online installs don't seem to work so well for me.

I've never see the UI open after downloading any file.
It may open after you update Avast but not for other downloads.

Clean Install of Avast:

I tried a repair, which finished, but did not fix my issue. I then removed avast using the utility, and reinstalled the latest version from the official website. This still has not stopped the UI from opening upon completion of any download.

However! I remembered that I use Internet Download Manager to manage all downloads. I checked in the IDM settings, and lo and behold, Avast is set as the virus scanning program.

So, in one way, that solves it!

Now my next question is...is there any "Command line parameters" that I can enter in the IDM settings to only show the avast UI if there IS a virus found?

How you updated will dictate recommended actions.

You shouldn't see the main avast window pop-up whenever you download a file unless you invoke windows explorer scanning.
Well, in a way you were invoking an avast windows explorer scan via IDM after every download, but not in the way one would think.

It's not necessary to invoke a windows explorer scan scan everytime you download a file or picture.  You can remove the IDM virus scanning line without any issues whatsoever.  If you kept your settings the way they were, what you were complaining about would never resolve.

Avast automatically scans all files when opened, created, or written in real-time and does so silently unless it detects something is wrong.  This real-time scanning includes online web activity.  You will see a pop-up window alerting you to a block or suspicious activity.

Pay attention when these occur.

Remove the IDM setting and extra step created by IDM, and you won't have further issues.  IDM is not necessary to alert IF a virus is found.  IDM doesn't alert.  IDM can't alert as it is not an anti-malware program.

Reboot and trust avast to do what it is supposed to do.

The user also get the credit for causing the problem. (Not Avast.)
Before you make changes, find out all the effects those changes cause. :)
