Avast Free Stuck on Performance Issues *Solved*
« on: May 09, 2019, 11:50:44 PM »
Not sure why Avast behaves differently on my two Win 7 64 computers; maybe because one is ‘Pro’ and the other is the ‘Home’ version.

Her computer (with Home) is set to auto update Avast.  My computer (Pro) is not.  However both auto updated  4/9/19 to version 19.4.4318.460.

The progress circle is gone.  OK, things change.  But this is where the new differences and the problem start.   Her new ‘progress bar’ is:

Browser -> Out dated apps -> AV -> Performance Issues

Mine is:

Browser -> Out dated apps -> AV -> Advanced Issues

The problem is on her computer as it gets stuck on Performance Issues.  One time I let it run over 25 minutes and get nothing but a spinning wheel that says 'Loading'.  I’ve tried a lot of times but usual give it ‘only’ 5-10 minutes before giving up.

I can close the program, and even put the computer to sleep, and retry Smart Scan but it tells me it’s 'still running' and it’s still stuck on Performance Issues; closing does not restart/reset Smart Scan.

Only a full reboot will reset Smart Scan, but the results are the same as it still gets stuck on Performance Issues.

CPU usage is only 0-1% while on Performance Issues scan.

As I've experience before, I can not find how to turn off / choose what is scanned.  I want the Outdated Apps scan off as well as Performance Issues scan off (and Advanced Issues on mine).

Any ideas on how to fix this and turn things off?
.

Do Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
If your Avast settings are not the default settings and you want them restored after the Clean Install, follow this before removing Avast.

Thanks for the help, Be Secure.  The short version is it's fixed.  Thanks!

Long version for those interested:

Repair App did not work.  It said it may take some time, and after a while I started timing it.  After 30 minutes from that point, I gave up and had to Log Off to get it to stop.

I then followed the link above and unplugged from the Internet and tried uninstalling Avast from the Control Panel.  That hung the machine, too.  I didn't time it but after more than 5 minutes of the uninstaller trying to stop the Avast Service, I had to manually stop it with Task Manager.  The uninstaller then finished fairly quickly.

I then ran, as per instructions in the link, the Uninstall Utility.  That went fine (but it was scary with the hung-ups I had).

After re-reboot I connected to the Internet and installed Avast Free.  It went fairly smoothly, too.  The only thing I noticed is when it ran it's first scan it seemed to 'take forever' and I had a blank window for a while.

This might be my imagination here, but on another reboot, it sure seemed to boot up faster than before.  It felt snappy but I've never timed boot times.

Again, thanks for the help.
