I'm assuming it has something to do with it scanning streaming content or something, is there a white list for the webshield?  It's not using a ton of CPU but I swear it didn't used to do this until after I did a repair of Avast recently.

Real-Time protection by Avast, or any antivirus for that matter, will use some CPU cycles to scan incoming data streams.  (Think streaming web movies where the incoming data is checked as it comes in).

-->  Your Repair of Avast may have fixed your real-time protections so they now work as they should.

Did you ever check this out?:  (You can watch your CPU usage whilst running these links)  --> https://www.amtso.org/security-features-check/

Real-Time protection BLOCKS viruses and malware from entering your system as it happens.  If it doesn't get in, there's no infection.

Avast usually pops a warning dialog box when this happens.  In order to pop the pop-up, CPU use is required, just as it is when real-time protection is running.

That's true.

I'm just paranoid because I was watching the task manager, a thing I usually only look at to get an idea of how many processes are running and RAM usage, now I've been paying attention to CPU usage and when watching Twitch or Youtube, things seem to be "lighting up" all over the board on my windows 7 machine.

dwm.exe is a big offender resting at around 5%
System
explorer.exe
csrss.exe
audiodg.exe

This is just a few but I feel like these are things that shouldn't be using CPU at all while just viewing streaming content.  So I'm paranoid.  Virus Scans are coming up clean though and these files seem legit when I check on them.

Everything is relative.

To me, 5% dwm.exe usage is nothing.  The other processes are necessary for Windows and must use CPU or Windows won't run at all.

Your system will be dead in the water.

If one has a process using 95%-100% CPU and refuses to let go of the CPU, then that is a real problem.  You'll get a freezing mouse, slow loading browsers, choppy videos; in other words, you'll know something isn't right and often a reboot will solve it.

Best advice:  Watch and learn via Task Manager, but don't do anything.  Else, don't fire up Task Manager at all.

That's what I'm telling myself.  As long as the system is working, honestly it doesn't matter too much.  I'm just tying a lot of my anxiety I feel like to my computer usage lately and I'm looking for a problem to fix even if one doesn't exist.

However that is a problem that isn't really for discussion here.  I'll try to keep my anxiety in check and let the system run as long as it's working.  I wasn't planning to kill any processes, just listing ones that are randomly lighting up as I watch Twitch because I swore it wasn't like that originally.

Twitch is setting off Avast real-time scanning modules.  Simple as that.  And normal too.

Thanks, you've made me feel way better.  I'm guessing those things are "lighting up" with CPU usage because Avast is scanning them also.  Well either way, I'm not going to think about it too much as long as it works.
