Over the past couple years I have learned that when I update avast from outside the software, meaning just selecting the update button on the front end of the software, it never updates correctly and I have to uninstall and reinstall the software. Yesterday a pop-up occurred from avast saying it wanted to restart my computer. I deleted the pop-up and continued to work until the computer was shut down for the day. Today, avast does not work at all. If I open it I get a black screen that does nothing and the software is turned off as indicated in the lower right notification area. What must have happened is avast attempted to update itself yesterday and failed, as usual. The reason these updates fail is because I have avast password protected and the software is unable to update correctly from outside itself when it is password protected. If avast attempts to automatically update an installation that is password protected, it should back off and leave it alone, because otherwise the update will be a failure. Now I have to waste my time uninstalling and reinstalling the software.
