Latest Program Update
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:08:00 PM »
Free Avast Antivirus
Latest Program Update: 19.6.2383
Virus Definitions Update: 190625-2

This morning (Tues), I installed the latest program update and it mentioned a free trial for Avast Internet Security.

Thinking it was a free unconditional trial that would automatically expire, I got as far as the credit card info then realized that it was only a free trial if I signed up first so I 'X'ed out of it.

Please answer each question separately.

1. Was 19.6.2383 a new update for the free version or was it only an update to sign up for Internet Security?
2. There was an internet security add-on added to my browser that was disabled by default; Since I 'X'ed out of the paid version, I deleted the add-on; Why did the update create an add-on even after I opted out of the paid version?

#1>Seems it was an effort to try AIS in hopes you would upgrade.
The latest version of Avast is 19.6.2383 that was released today.
#2> Not sure

Schmidthouse:

Latest Program Update: 19.6.2383 is what I meant to type.

To be clear then, 19.6.2383 was a new update for the free version (regardless of whether AIS was opted into) and the AIS option was also built into that update.

Is that correct?

Yes it was an update of the Free Version and all other versions
The Trial promo is part of the adds/promos that come with running the Free version.

The AIS 'Free Trial' wording is misleading then because I thought that AIS would be free for X number of days and then expire automatically.

However, after entering my personal info on the first page, the next page wanted my credit card info, so it turned out that the free trial was only free if I signed up (meaning that I would be automatically billed after the free trial ended).

Fortunately, I X'ed out of the credit card info page but the offer is misleading.

1.  I updated my win10 system to avast! free 19.6.2383 when this update became available.

2.  I didn't get an offer for the free trial of AIS.

If you do get an offer for 60 days free trial of AIS, etc. only the trial period is free at the end of the period you would be charged, this is what the payment mandate is all about.  So you were right to back out at that point, unless of course you wanted to try it.

You could actually install AIS and use it for up to 30 days, no payment mandate required at the end of the 30 days, uninstall and go back to avast free or convert to a paid version.

3.  The only thing I got after the update and reboot was the UI screen with the pre-checked do I want to have Chrome, which I promptly unchecked.

DavidR:

Please answer each question separately:

1a. In order to benefit from the free 60 day AIS trial while Avast Free Antivirus is installed, I would have to enter my credit card info in advance and confirm the code that is emailed to me. After that, the first 60 days are free. On the 61st day, I would be billed monthly unless I cancelled it before the 61st day-Is that correct?

1b. In order to benefit from AIS' free 30 day trial, I could uninstall Avast Free Antivirus, install AIS and use free for 30 days (without having to register my  credit card info advance). After the trial expired, uninstall AIS, and re-install Avast Free Antivirus-Is that correct?

2. If the above is correct, why is the free trial period different depending on 'how' AIS is installed?

In other words, why is there a 60 day free trial if done within Avast Free Antivirus (more free trial time but the trade-off is having to provide credit card info upfront) but only 30 days if Avast Free Antivirus is uninstalled and AIS is installed fresh (less free trial time but the trade-off is not having to provide credit card info upfront?)

1a.  You would not only have to cancel the trial before the end of the 60 day trial, you would also have to cancel the automatic renewal payment instruction or the following year you could get notified (in advance) of a renewal payment.

1b.  You could install AIS over the top of avast free, but many would advise downloading AIS, uninstall avast free reboot and then install AIS. Some would go further and suggest doing a clean reinstall (including the avast uninstall utility.

2.  The difference is simple you aren't getting 60 days to make up your mind.  There has always for some considerable time a 30 day period before you are required to input a license.  The 60 day trial differs in that you get a license to input into the trial.  To do that they want you to complete the payment mandate.

Personally I would look at what the AIS program functions and features and ask yourself if you really need them (e.g. what have you used to cover these functions.  See https://www.avast.com/compare-antivirus.

DavidR:

Thanks for the info.

I have no use for AIS but, like I stated initially, the wording gave the impression that AIG was unconditionally free for 60 days so I figured AIG would automatically expire after 60 days and revert back to Avast Free Antivirus.

As a result, I was surprised when the 2nd page requested credit card info. Realizing that the 60 day free trial was conditional upon having my credit card info and that 'free' did not actually mean unconditionally free, I 'X'ed out of the 2nd page and stayed with Avast Free Antivirus.

I have a separate free anti-malware program and updates periodically include an unconditional 14 day trial period of the premium software features (real-time protection), that automatically reverts back to the free version (without having to enter credit card info), so I figured AIG was similar.

You're welcome.

No it doesn't revert back to Avast free, even the 30 day trial usage of AIS doesn't revert back to Avast Free.  You have to go through the normal Control Panel, Programs, uninstall and at that point it asks if you would like to revert/go back/install Avast Free.

DavidR:

Regarding the installation of *AIS in order to take advantage of the free 30 day trial (by installing it over Avast Antivirus Free) and without having to provide credit card info at time of installation, what happens to *AIS after the 30 day trial period? Does it stop working completely or are there minimal features that are functional continuously?

You keep saying AIG, I take it you mean the AIS Avast Internet Security.

It doesn't stop working right away but you will get frequent reminders to purchase the license and enter it.

Yes, I meant AIS.

After frequent reminders that go unanswered, will the software stop working completely or will its minimum features still work?

Just curious.

I honestly don't know as an avast user and having never used the 30 day AIS trial.

I guess most people wouldn't get past the regular nagging to purchase and either uninstall it or purchase the license.  I certainly haven't seen much about it in the forums.

At the end of the 30 days you either need to pay up or, remove the product.
During the uninstall process you'll receive an option to turn this paid version into the free version.
To avoid the trial offers at the end of the conversion take a look at this:
