Avast Interface too big for wife's laptop screen
« on: June 26, 2019, 03:49:06 PM »
When the Smart Scan pop up comes up, or if I just access the interface by clicking on the icon, the window is too big and there is no X visible to close it. In order to close the thing I have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and go into Task Manager. My wife isn't even that computer savvy and is disabled and often home alone. These kinds of things frustrate her to no end, so I'd like a solution, such as how to reduce the size of that window so the X is visible, so that she can just close it. Any help would be appreciated.

The avastUI for some time has been absolutely massive, there is so much empty space it could easily have been reduced in size (for those with lower resolution screens.  Better still it would have been nice if 'the user' was allowed to resize it.

You can use a common windows key combination Alt+F4 that should close the 'Active' window.

Are you sure that there is no X as most of the alternative sections have an X in the top left, but the Smart Scan does have an X top right of the screen.

What size screen and resolution is your wife using ?

Another temporary hack to screen resolution used for an overly large installation might help.

Better still it would have been nice if 'the user' was allowed to resize it.

What is worse is that the System Menu (Alt+Space) has "Size" as an option but it is totally non-functional  >:(

I hadn't tried that before, and probably not the OP.  It would have probably compounded the frustration.

Totally agree with posts above. I remember moaning about the massive size of the black GUI when it was introduced several versions back. It is unnecessarily big on small laptop screens.
The whole GUI is a mess with "old settings" and stupid "geek:area". I use the old settings GUI for most things still.

geek.area is designed for those that want full control and adjustment.
It isn't something that's ever used by the average user.
Most users don't even need the old settings.
Could Avast have done this better? Certainly but the focus seems to be on default settings.
For most users, the default settings are also the best settings.

Why must the geek:area be such a huge secret that is my only problem with it (well more than one issue), other than it needs to be optimised on more than a single level rather than what it appears right now a dumping ground avast want hidden to avoid customisation.

If this isn't the case why is it such a damn secret, it is bad enough that this UI still isn't ready for prime time in that it needs the Old Settings (buried in the Troubleshooting area).

Is anyone at Avast even working on this mess of a UI ???
