I've been using Avast Anti-virus for a number of years now. But lately I noticed an up-tick in the advertising pop-ups, mostly saying they will clean up the system and make it faster, while it seems Avast is what's really slowing things down.

I have also always recommended Avast to others when I help them with there systems. (Too many of them).  They have also been contacting me about how slow there computers have become. Some telling ME they removed Avast and it's better.

The last upgrade really seemed to slow me down. So I had to remove it, as well as remove it from some family and friends systems as well.

I have liked Avast, and I may return to it someday, but for now I've decided to look for another solution. I don't miss the pop-ups either...

Update!

After I removed Avast, I could not load webpages properly with Chrome. Seems uninstalling Avast, Avast still leaves behind the Avast Browser Security  extension in Chrome. That caused all sorts of page load problems, even after I removed it. Even though I had the latest version of Chrome, I had to re-install it to clear up whatever mess the Avast Browser Security Extension was causing. It must have not liked trying to do its job without Avast Actually installed.

I think Avast should be removing that Browser Security Extension, and cleaning things up when Avast itself is uninstalled, seeing as it was the reason that extension was installed in the first place.

Repair & Clean Install of Avast -> https://goo.gl/t7aJGq
If you just want to remove Avast, simply follow the uninstall portion.

Thanks for the link.

I have loved avast, so I did go through the whole process of repair as mentioned in those links, but the system was still so slow. Avast wasn't my first program removed or repaired to try and fix the slowness. A few other programs were removed first, as I had learned to trust Avast. System was checked. Drives were tested with more than just what Windows supplied basic tests. Speed tests and network connectivity was tested as well.

Been doin this work for a while. It wasn't until I uninstalled avast the system returned to it's normal, faster speed. BUT... That's when page opening issues occured and I tracked that down to the Browser Security Extension Avast had left behind.  It would have been great if the Repair had worked. Would have saved me a heck of a lot of time. Back-up, removal's, tests, re-installs, etc....

One interesting thing was, when I went to use another AV, it found one Avast had missed. I mentioned it elsewhere. PennybeeLinkury.  That was found with just Windows Defender. Hopefully they add it. It was deleted so, I couldn't submit it. Best I could do was mention it so they'll look into it...

As I said, I loved Avast, random annoying pop-ups and all, and I may be back to use it again, once I read the new issues are resolved. But for now, what I am using seems to be working well, with less pop-ups as well. Time will tell.

BTW, Congrats on the "59 Years of Happiness". :)

You can shut off the pop-ups.  I feel like I should not see them in the paid version of the program at all and it should be user choice in the free version.

Open Avast, Open the menu, select settings, make sure general is selected, and choose personal privacy.  You can untick the boxes for show offers for other avast product and show offers for 3rd part products.  Once that is done all of the pop-ups stop.

Uninstall Chrome, that's your problem. It's a huge programme and will use a lot of your ram. Use AVAST Secure Browser instead, it's a much more slimline application.
