You could try the Repair function (and reboot) and see if that resolves it first.

Otherwise a clean reinstall would be advised, this assumes that you have found a copy of the 18.5.xxxx installation file.

"Product successfully repaired"

Unfortunately at present issue is exactly the same as before.

'Current version' still 190714-2

I'm not running version 18.5 but rather 19.6.  If I go to 'Old Settings' and then run a manual update via Update, I don't get the latest version vps displayed in the Update GUI.  Rather, the old original version is still (incorrectly) displayed.  All other parameters show and run correctly.

Closing and then re-opening the Update window via 'Old Settings' window is required to show the latest vps version.  Apparently this window no longer auto-updates (refreshes) as it used to.

I don't recall version 18.5 having an 'Old Settings' link embedded in the GUI, but wonder if the bug for 19.6 is also showing in 18.5?  Is this possible?

No change after rebooting.

No 'Your computer is not protected - Current version not up to date'.

Thank you for your input mchain.

I am accessing Update through 'About Avast'.

DavidR is using 18.5 too - he is seeing correct version / display.

The old settings aren't in the 18.x.xxxx version/s

The UI changed massively in 19.x and it was to say the least incomplete, hence the old settings inclusion in troubleshooting section.  This 19.x UI with lots buried in the old settings (should the user even find that) or in the completely secret geek:area.

DavidR and those who assisted me.....

You were good enough to help so I feel I should update you.

Avast Team did not respond. I didn't want to waste time on a clean install of Avast only to find that the problem still remained, as it did with the repair.

So I uninstalled it and installed ClamWin, but was later told it wasn't enough.

I have Comodo Free Antivirus too now. How effective that is I'm not sure - read differing reports.

Well as far as I'm aware ClamWin is an on-demand AV and one I couldn't recommend if your system goes on-line as most of today's malware/exploits originate there.

I have no idea on how good or otherwise the Comodo AV is, because I have never used it.  Ordinarily it is not recommended to have two resident AV (live/active) installed.  However as I mentioned ClamWin is an on-demand AV so shouldn't conflict.

I would certainly have opted for a clean install of Avast, it isn't that onerous and there are videos to walk you through it.  But the system and time is yours to make a choice that fits your needs.

If ClamWin is similar to ClamTK I use on Linux, then it does not compare to Avast. It is a manual on-demand scan and user has to choose what to do with warnings. That is OK on Linux but I would not be happy to rely on that manual method on Windows. I am afraid I also have no experience of Comodo AV but there maybe something posted in non-avast section of forum here:

Thank you for the replies / information.

Unfortunately couldn't see anything about Comodo on that forum.

I have uninstalled ClamWin. Seemed there was little point in having it, I need online security.

I have been using Avast a long time..............I'll see how I go, might try reinstallation at some point.

Don't think Comodo Antivirus alone is good with malicious URLS, which concerns me?

Are some links on Google still unsafe - has there been any improvement in relation to this?

If you want realtime protection with ClamWin you must also install Clam Sentinel

Clam Sentinel  >>  http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net/
