Not happening after every boot, from time to time.

After an update, you should reboot the system. Shutting down and restarting isn't the same.

From the OS viewpoint it is exactly the same. Did you mean logging off and on again?

Well win 8 &10 is the case in point unless you specify what happens when you shutdown (or what you think is shutdown) it is actually using the Fast Startup function where it truly doesn't power down.

When you update the program, you should choose Restart so that any changes actually happen.
Shutdown uses the fast reboot and many changes don't happen.
When there is a major Eindows update, you are always asked to restart your computer.

That is an issue with how Windows 10 calls the feature. A shutdown only means (or should only mean imho) one thing and that is actually shutting down. Completely.

One more reason to dislike Win10 I guess.

Then I guess you dislike win8 also as it is the same there as far as I'm aware according to the link I gave.

Quote from: extract from article
Fast startup is a feature first implemented in Windows 8 and carried over to Windows 10 that provides a faster boot time when starting up your PC. It's a handy feature and one that most people use without even knowing, but there are others who disable it immediately when they get their hands on a new PC.

Indeed I dislike Win8 also. The GUI alone is reason enough.

Shutdown has meant the same thing since donkey days, and then MS starts messing with it.

Again: what MS calls a shutdown, by default the fast shutdown/restart, is in fact not an actual shutdown. Therein lies the problem.

If I tell someone to shut down the machine I expect the thing to be off. Not in some semi-hibernation state.

But it is good to know the difference and advise accordingly.

Couldn't argree more.  Shutdown should be a complete power-down, anything less is is hibernation.  Hibernation does not = shutdown as the system board is still live and powered up.

You can always turn off "fast start-up" in Win10 Settings (see screenshot).
I had problems with it in the past and did that, but automatically reverted back on after one of the Win10 Feature updates. I have left it alone as fast-start now seems a bit less problematic.
Win10 and Win8 users need to know that Shutdown and subsequent startup is from a hybernation type state even though power goes off. The only way to do a hard boot is by doing a Restart, as others have stated here.

Not agreeing with the way a feature works, doesn't change the fact as to how it works.
Simply work within the options that are provided. It isn't hard and allows for a faster start when you don't need to
totally update everything since no changes have occurred.
