or does the Smart Scan contain components not included in the full virus scan
Yes  >>  https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Antivirus-PC-virus-scan

Smart Scan: a comprehensive scan that detects malware, out-of-date software, browser add-ons with poor reputations, network threats, and performance issues.

Malware = Malicious software ... a name that covers evry malicious program that can harm a computer

All virus are malware, but all malware is not virus ....

there are ... virus / trojan / worm / ransomware / spyware / adware / backdors / rootkits / keyloggers ............... and they are all Malware

Win 7 x64 SP1
Avast Free Version

For proactive purposes, I run a manual Full Virus Scan periodically.

1a. Does the FVS include the components as the Smart Scan (so only a full virus scan is necessary) or does the SS contain components not included in the FVS (so both manual scans should be done)?

b. If both scans detect different components, should a FVS or a SS be run first or does the order not matter?

c. Since a SS detects malware, does this scan replace software like Malwarebytes or does full anti-malware software have components that SS does not?

d. Since Avast Free provides on-access scanning, are the FVS and SS even necessary?
