Avast Free
« on: July 31, 2019, 09:08:04 PM »
Hi,

Installed Avast Free today.

With Web Shield enabled I cannot open several websites.
With Web Shield disabled there is no problem.
Is there a simple solution to this niggling problem?

Why can't they be opened, e.g. is there an avast alert/error window ?

DavidR,
Thanks for response.

The following is the response I get when I try to open some websites.

Cannot securely connect to this page

This might be because the site uses outdated or unsafe TLS security settings. If this keeps happening, try contacting the website’s owner.

Perhaps I should have mentioned I am on Win 10 and Using Internet Explorer 11.
If I use Firefox, all is well, but I would rather use IE

This used to happen in firefox and this was how avast crowbarred its way into firefox to be able to scan https traffic.  Mozilla have subsequently made changes (not because they were in the wrong) to prevent their users being effected and Mozilla getting the blame.

Not I don't know why this is happening in IE and to what extent, just a few/several or all https sites ?

A screenshot of the error window could help any Avast Team member should they view this topic.

Whilst I have avoided IE from way bast IE5 or 6 and I thought IE11 is effectively abandoned in favour of MS Edge in Win10.  Have you tried MS Edge and if so does this happen with it ?

That doesn't look like an Avast message.

That doesn't look like an Avast message.

Not entirely sure on that, whilst the message isn't generated by Avast, there were similar messages in firefox, which were as a result of avasts method of intercepting TLS traffic to scan it.

I would however agree with the moving on from IE11 (end of support) as MS are unlikely to resolve this in the way Mozilla did.

As a test, I have just opened a number of websites using IE11 and Avast Free under Win10 1903. All OK.
I would agree IE11 should no longer be your preferred browser. In my case it never was.

Davidr,

When I uninstalled Bitdefender it did not uninstall properly, leaving some traces behind.
I think that Bitdefender and Avast were probably conflicting.
I have since reinstalled Avast and all is well.

Please mark as solved.

DavidR,
Forgot to mention that before reinstalling I eventually managed to get rid of the remaining traces of Bitdefender.
