Avast Secure Browser Quick Question?
« on: September 25, 2019, 01:46:14 PM »
I am using the Avast Secure Browser on my Win10 PC.  Everything is updated and current.

Something happened with the browser, and it will not open at all.  Blue Screen View says aswSnx.sys+27860 Avast Virtualization Driver is the problem...

1.  Is there a way to uninstall the Avast Secure Browser without losing the bookmarks?  After seeing many posts on this same driver issue with no mentioned solution, should I uninstall it and use something else for a while?

I'm worried about losing things a second time, but love this browser!  Let me know, please!  Thank you for your time!

I was going to say Export Bookmarks (e.g. as HTML) but that cannot be done in ASB. Other browsers have that function, but after I just looked at Settings I cannot find this faciity listed in ASB Settings. Something for the devs maybe.

Hi,

You can export your bookmarks.
Please see this article https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Use-Secure-Browser
and locate the section which says Export bookmarks to another browser.

Could you also provide me with a log file, please?
Please see this link. https://support.avast.com/en-eu/article/Submit-support-file

Thank you for your reply!

Do you happen to know where in the Avast Secure Browser that the file is stored that would hold the bookmarks?

Here is what I had to do so far:  The Avast Secure Browser kept locking up and freezing, then gave me a blue screen.

My BlueScreen viewer told me it was an Avast driver aswSnx.sys Avast Virtualization Driver.

I uninstalled the Avast Secure Browser and when I did, I unchecked the box that said (check this box to remove your history, bookmarks, ect.) that way the file that holds the bookmarks would not be removed.

After the browser was removed, then my Avast Anti-Virus did the same thing, and it was working just fine....weird huh?

Anyway, got both re-installed, and everything is working again, I'm using the browser now with no problems, but cannot find where it stores the bookmarks so I can copy them back into this browser.

Any ideas where to look?

Thanks for your time....

Does anyone have an idea on where the Avast Secure Browser stores your bookmarks?  Had to re-install and need to find the file to get the bookmarks back in to the re-installed browser.

Hi Gruneichtime,

You can find your bookmarks here:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data\Default

Let us know in case of any problem  :)

Thank you for your reply Misa

I did find a bookmarks file, but it is only for a new bookmark.  I am looking for where the program stores your bookmarks when you do a re-install of the Avast Secure Browser.  I made sure to un-check the box that said to remove bookmarks, data, etc.
when using the uninstall program so my bookmarks would be saved somewhere.  I just cannot find them.  I've searched every file that said anything like .old or old.? and am finding nothing.

Any other suggestions?

Tnis is where it is on my system

It's a bit late but here are the instructions for doing  clean install of the browser,

Download the installer from here, https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser
Download the Secure Browser Removal tool from here, https://download.avastbrowser.com/avast_secure_browser_uninstall.exe
Save your Bookmarks via the Book Marks Manager if you have custom bookmarks so you can import them when you re-install.
Uninstall Secure Browser via Programs and Features - Reboot
Run the removal tool, reboot, run the installer import your favorites if you saved them.

I must not be explaining this correctly..... :-\

I'm going to try again for the 5th time..... ;D

1. A complete re-install has already been done.

2.  Everything is working now, but still getting occasional freeze ups.

3.  Have re-installed browser before, and never have I lost the bookmarks until now.  Their gone....

4.  When I re-installed the browser I made sure to uncheck the box, so I would NOT lose the bookmarks.

5.  Where is it that Avast Secure browser stores your bookmarks when you re-install it?  Hint, they are not under a file called
Bookmarks, that is only for your current bookmarks.

Soooo, other than opening each and every file, folder, etc. on my hard drive to find them, I was hoping someone on here would know under what and where they might be stored.  Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

P.S.  I have done numerous searches on anything and everything trying to find them, but nothing yet.

If you didn't find them where they are located and explained here,
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=229609.msg1520983#msg1520983
Then they don't exist. Unchecking the removal simply leaves them in place.
If that didn't happen, then they got overridden.

Thank you for your reply Bob3160!

That is the conclusion that I am coming too... :'(  After spending another 1 1/2 hours last night manually going through files and not finding anything close.  I was just holding on to a little bit of hope that maybe there might be a hidden file somewhere I just was not seeing.  Oh well, it is what it is...  thanks again for your help.

The problem that I am having is after it recently updated, EVERY time I boot up Avast Secure Browser loads, even though it's not selected to do so. When I look at settings, it's not selected.  I like using it and would prefer not to remove it, but it's looking more and more like I'm going to have to fully remove Avast in order to fix this.  So what's going on that it's doing this?
