I can't understand why this could be happening, the VPS updates don't change anything and you didn't say if it was a Program update (usually requires a reboot) or VPS update. There should be no difference in how avast's web shield works from one browser to another it just monitors http traffic, so I'm at a loss as I don't have IE7 or Vista and cant test anything.

Sorry we will have to see if one of the Alwil team or someone with vista and IE7 picks up on this.

Hi,

I had the same problem, Web Shield block my web (http) access,
It start after I had applied the following tweak (for improve XP performance) :

Start regedit and navigate to the following key:

  [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Add these two lines then save the changes and reboot:

  "DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001

  "LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001

(I take the instraction from - http://kadaitcha.cx/performance.html )

After I restore the original values ( dword:00000000 ) for the both registry lines, all came back to work fine !!!

I don't really know why it happen in my machine, because in my friend it work fine, maybe it related to some new hotfix from microsoft ????

My machine : Windows XP SP2 (with all updates), IE 7

I did some more checking, and the problem is coming from "LargeSystemCache" registry changing.
Anyway, when I searched the web, I crossed a lot of different opinions, about this tweak.

Here is some that catch my mind:
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks11.htm
http://qaix.com/hardware/266-770-xp-s-largesystemcache-can-cause-data-corruption-read.shtml
http://www.hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-716644.html

so, as I understand it, this strange behavior, is related to the hardware (it explain why on my friend computer it work fine !!!).
I have Ati video card, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, AMD Athlon 64 X2.

Hope this information will help other.

I've been having the same problem for 2 weeks now. Can't browse internet when on-access protetcion is running. I've tried things mentioned here with no help. I'm using win XP, Opera and Kerio firewall.

If I keep on-access protection running I can usually see the internet page if refresh the page a couple of times. Sometimes the page is loaded with no problems.

What happens if you disable WebShield?
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

If I keep on-access protection running I can usually see the internet page if refresh the page a couple of times. Sometimes the page is loaded with no problems.
I think this could be related to Kerio privacy features + avast. If you disable that part of Kerio, will it help?

Ok.

I checked that ashWebSv.exe, ashMaiSv.exe, avast.setup and others Avast related files are not blocked by the firewall. The same problem remains still. I tried different kerio settings with no help. Even shutting down the firewall doesn't help.

Disabling webshield didn't help either.

..but then I uninstalled my Finnish version of Avast and installed an English version. The English version allows me to browse internet by shutting down WebShield instead of shutting down on-access protection.

So the problem is partially solved, but this is still a mystery to me. Everything was working just fine before, then I went to a vacation and didn't touch my computer for a week. And when I got back home I had this problem. Very strange. All I can think of that something has updated itself and caused this somehow.

Can you post the full path where you were installing avast?

I installed it to D:\Programs\Avast (Windows is in C: drive)

Does it matter where it is installed?

Normally it doesn't matter where you install it, however with some foreign (sorry) language version it is possible that your version of windows also uses special characters (accents, etc.) in the path to avast, that has in the past caused a problem for some avast users. They have found it OK when installed to the default location or some like you have installed the English version. Why that would resolve what might be the special character accents is beyond me.

David answered.

To check your installation, please, post the last 100-200 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

For any reason, avast cannot access that folder correctly.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
