new to avast

hi, i really like this, it pciked up a trojan taht avg didnt =)  do have a few questions...

one is if i wnat teh password protected area to be scanned will i have to rmeove my password?

and how do i turn on the im,email, etc. protection?

1. Can you give more information, where the folder is and how have you protected it ?
User password protected folders (they may also be encrypted) can't be scanned by avast as it doesn't know the password and there is no way to pass a parameter (the password) to avast. So the only way was if the folder was open you could probably use the right click context menu Scan with ashQuick.exe. That is a big probably and requires more information on exactly hoe this folder is protected.

2. What is your OS ?
With XP for instance these services are enabled and you shouldn't have to do anything else provided your email and IM programs are supported. Open the on-access protection control (either right click or double click the avast icon) and ensure both these providers are running. Check in the Instant Messaging, Customize, that your IM program is in the list of supported programs and the option is ticked.

Are you talking about the list of files that can't be scanned after a routine scan ?

Please, help us to help you... you're writing so few to describe your problem that makes impossible to understand

yah those =S and the files i still will be running anotehr scan to get them which i will be getting to tonight.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

ah ok, so i gues this ha snothing to do with my desktop PW then, i'll get the files when i run teh next scan.

no, i thought the avast isnt scanning the pasword protected file because i have a password on my desktop.

If the files you are talking about are the ones that can't be scanned, then just post a sample of the common ones, reason they can't be scanned, location and file name, e.g. (C:\windows\system32\protected-file-name.xxx) ?

If it is the ones that were detected and delt with by avast then I doubt that will be necessary.
