I open Settings from the upper right menu and the window slides out right to left. I select Update from the left column and then go to update definitions and application and before I can click on both, the window slides back to the right and closes, without me checking the red X in the corner which is how I would close the window if I want. I have to keep reopening the Settings because it closes before I am doing what I want to do.

Have you tried a 'Repair' of your Avast installation.
You can go to Menu/ Settings/ Troubleshooting and click on "Repair App" (in Green), follow instructions and reboot.

NOTE: If you can't access Settings then go to Control Panel/ Programs and Features/ Select Avast/ Uninstall/  then the option to "Repair"

Program is now behaving normally. I will try the suggested solution of using the repair option within Avast settings if problem recurs and persists. Thank you.
