Catalina and Chrome/Safari
« on: November 11, 2019, 03:23:13 PM »
Hi,
I have a lot of trouble with Chrome (and Safari) after the Catalina update.
I'm running the latest version of Catalina and the latest version of Avast premium security.
Firefox works without issues.

Chrome starts but can't not open websites, and keeps on trying. Closing Chrome did not work, had to kill it every time.
Also, the shutdown of Catalina fails, have to force shut down.

After a restart of Catalina Chrome works for a few hours (sometimes less).

I tried a lot of scenario's.

After 4 chrome re-installs, removing all Chrome extensions, deactivating Chrome hardware acceleration, de-activating firewall, installing Chrome Beta, ...
This (Command+Option+P+R on boot) seemed to help for me : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250737616
But day later the issue returned.

Removed CleanMyMac X, and again restarted Macbook with Command+Option+P+R.
Chrome and Safari both work fine at this time. Safari first launch is slower than when running Mojave.
But the problem returned the next day.

Replacing network location seemed to work : https://macreports.com/mac-catalina-wi-fi-problems-fix/
But the problem returned the next day.

I worked more than a day in Mac Safe Mode without a problem.

Then I uninstalled Avast, and the issues are gone: chrome/safari works fine, and the normal MacBook shutdown works again.
Already 2,5 days without issues, and everything seems to run faster.

Will there be a new version of Avast tackling these problems? When would this be released?

Best regards,

Marc

I have exactly the same issues (Safari breaks and unable to shut down).  I have had them since Catalina was released at least once a day but sometimes 3 or 4 times a day requiring a forced reboot.  I have removed Avast and everything is now fine.

I just wonder if this would get a better response in the Avast Mac Security sub-forum, if it may be in some way related to Avast Mac Security.

Which is why it should be addresses in the relevant sub-forum.

I gave up after many exchanges with support. They could not find a solution.
I switched to Bitdefender.

You also apparently never made an attempt to post your problem in the proper section of the forum as suggested.
