Installation crashes PC
« on: November 13, 2019, 05:47:35 PM »
Just got a new laptop, Windows 10. Installation of Free Avast has taken 17 hours, still running. Last night I tried to kill it after 7 hours, it killed the laptop completely, I had to call Asus to even get it to boot.

The install appears to run, but there is no option to stop it, and uninstall doesn't work while setup is running.

I use Avast on all my other PCs and laptops, but this one just won't play.

I'm one more try from moving to another product. Believe it or not, I had to start a new thread because I typed "Installation on Windows 10" into the search box, and it didnt find anything. Clearly an issue with the function, I'm sure there's loads out there. Can anybody point me at some help ?

Also how to you stop an installation in progress ?

Thanks

- Which Avast..? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
- Which version..?
- OS..? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP/Build..?)
- Other security related software installed..?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?

Free (it says that). Version - no idea, I can't even tell you if it's installed or not, but it's what I downloaded from Avast on Tuesday.
Win 10 Home 1809 17763.168 (yes I know it needs an update, but I want to get Anti-virus on before I download any more stuff).
I have Malwarebytes and SpyBot search and destroy - which all happily co-exist on my other systems

It seems to be pre-installed with McAfee but I've not activated it. I'm guessing it has Windows Defender too, for what it's worth

It's a new laptop

.... but I've used Avast on my other devices for years and years

Regarding the install, I still don't know if it's installed or not. No icons anywhere, nothing to tell me its running, no dialogue, but it is on the list of things that I can uninstall, and parts of it show up in Task Manager

My inclination now I have an Ethernet connection is to download it again and see if it installs then. What do you think ?

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of any prior installed AV(s)..!! (McAfee/Spybot)
-> https://support.avast.com/article/11/

Then:
1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

PS: Regarding Malwarebytes, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/253227-announcing-malwarebytes-40-for-windows/?do=findComment&comment=1342873
