Do you mean all the icons (programs) running in taskbar? All icons on Windows Explorer?
Hummm...
Are you using another antivirus in this same computer?

No , all icons in taskbar and in windows explorer
1 start Avast
2 scan disk = ok all icons are there
3 after close avast and move the mouse cursor to the taskbar all icons go to .....
The windows explorer only show the tree symbol "+" and not the folder icon

Avast found
Win32:Small-BEN [Trj]" has been found in "c:\_RESTORE\ARCHIVE\FS397.CAB\A0001612.CPY" file.

I just reinstall Win ME and is the same

Did you have another antivirus in this computer?
Any firewall? Other security program?
How much RAM do you have?

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

1) Disable System Restore on Windows ME: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q264887
2) Clean your temporary files.
3) Use a-squared (trojan removers).

It's hard to say for sure, just guessing...

Ram = 192
It's not that much and, indeed, graphical stuffs use a lot of RAM, could be a problem from time to time...

Firewall kerio 4   Disabled at this moment
If you uninstall Kerio, will the icons stay there?
Kerio is having some issues when used with avast. Leftovers in the screen, freezes...  :'(

Another antivirus was removed before install avast
Which was it?

I don't think disappearing icons are caused by insufficient RAM. It's so called "resources" that often run out on Windows 9x, unfortunatelly. You can try to remove some automatically started programs (with Windows start)... maybe use the skinless Simple User Interface, instead of the skinned one... but that's probably all you can do about it.
