Looking for an alternative for Google Translate?
« on: December 27, 2019, 03:49:58 PM »
See: https://www.deepl.com/translator#  (Free install for Windows available).

Other Google alternatives (for those that want to steer away from too much of the Google Global Monopoly Modus):

Google Maps: https://www.openstreetmap.org
Google Translate: https://www.deepl.com (just block analytisc/fonts as a standard)
Gmail: https://protonmail.com
Google: https://www.qwant.com/ (startpage has gone further adware-commercial lately)
Chrome: https://www.mozilla.org/nl/firefox (plus uMatrix)

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

I would be happy to accept something better.
If it isn't better or provides more accurate information, why change?
All your information is already public knowledge.

Compartmentalized change is not always only for something better,
but for something completely different with less ad-tracking involved.

So to keep your spheres of life apart from each other, just like in private/in public or "with curtains closed and open".
That kind of separation is meant.

Use for instance three accounts via a VM. One is your real name one (very sparsely, use only when there is no alternative or you are forced to use your real name by law),  one is a Google alter-ego, a public one to use on the Interwebz,
and one is your social media account (no facebook for me) and keep those three strictly separate.

I would use the named service alternatives for instance in the case of  private accounts,
where you use your real name, react to official services etc.

For other general services where you use an alter-ego account, feel free to use Google services.
For instance I never use a personal photo inside online accounts, I will leave it blank.

With all the data breaches and leaks, is there a real alternative?

Rather depends on the browser you use or are you using a site specific solution.

I have a translation add-on in Firefox (ImTranslator: Translator, Dictionary) so I can highlight and translate in one action, no need to go to a site to do any translation.  Handy in the forums.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Also works well in Chrome or Avast Secure Browser using the following link.

Good news, a nice hand tool, no having to exit a topic, etc. to get a translation.

Thanks, DavidR, for that suggestion, gonna  run the extension in inside avast secure browser.
Brave browser is constantly nagging on about installing Google translate extension.

I have nothing against Google Chrome and/or chromium type browsers (as avast secure browser is one as well),
but I do not like the overt intrusiveness and overwhelming tracking habits of Google with their browsers.

I also appreciate what Google did with Google Safe Browsing, after acquiring Virus Total,
with bringing https everywhere to browsers,
This together with all the other security inspirations to benefit end-users and themselves
(as part of their core-business).

But once in a while and for specific occasions I prefer an alternative of sorts.
Yep, in such cases I like to feel snug and comfy behind a good tool like uMatrix and on google android with blokada.

Also the Cookienator tool on Windows is something I like very much, as also I like like Voodooshield,
next to all preferred avast solutions off course  ;)

You're welcome.

On the subject of Cookies (a drift OT) I used to use Cookie Monster (no longer compatible), for a while I tried Cookie Master but I found that too intrusive, broke many sites as effectively it blocked all cookies and you had to enable site by site.  Which in itself isn't a problem when you sort your frequently used sites, etc.

Where it became a real pain in the backside was on-line shopping where there are many third party cookies and they too were blocked and although its help files said that these could be allowed individually within the primary/originating site, the interface didn't allow it (as they were third party and then Firefox's enhanced protection kicked in).

For now it is disabled awaiting an update to see if what they described in the help file makes it to a released version.
