Are you using the last avast version (4.7.871)?
This error should be corrected...  ::)

You can download servers.def from here: http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Save it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder
Start the update again.

When i go to that link it opens a list of sever not a file like
[server0]
name=Download1 AVAST server
url=http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x
stats=http://download1.avast.com/cgi-bin/iavs4stats.cgi ....   ???

It is a file... Copy the text and paste over the contents of the servers.def file...
Easily, you can delete the servers.def file and start the update again...

Which avast version are you using?

You shouldn't be trying to open it like a normal web page.

Right click on the link and select Save As or Save Link As, depending on what browser you use and save it so you can find it later. Then copy it to the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder, you should be asked if you want to replace the existing file, answer Yes.
