Avast remnants preventing upgrade to Win 10
« on: January 23, 2020, 03:35:50 PM »
HI,
I'm running Win7 SP1 home  64 bit and trying to move to WIN 10.
My CheckSUR log showed multiple Avast related errors. I had previously deleted Avast 2 years ago.
I ran Avastclear.exe but the problems remained.

I read a suggestion to re-install Avast and then delete again. I did and was left with different errors.
CheckSUR (file attached) show 8 entries of CSI C Mark Deployment Not Marked.

There are entries in winsxs\Manifest corresponding to the errors. Screenshot attached.

Also I ran a registry scan showing in particular
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_020285fe6d6e0580]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_018be6966dc83925]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_policy.14.0.avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_ef17e13d91c55d96]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_policy.14.0.avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_eea141d5921f913b]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\x86_avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_49afbcd581ea2e86]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\x86_avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_49391d6d8244622b]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\x86_policy.14.0.avast.vc140.crt_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_36c51814a641869c]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\x86_policy.14.0.avast.vc140.mfc_fcc99ee6193ebbca_none_364e78aca69bba41]

My question is "What's the best way to clean up my system"?
I can't delete\move the files from winsxs. I sit OK to delete the registry keys (after making a backup) and run SURT again?
Or is there a far simpler way?

All suggestions welcome,
Thanks, Ross

I've reported this to Avast.
Let's see if that helps.

Thanks for the information, this version has a known issue that can cause errors you mentioned (invalid signatures). However, they should not break Windows 10 upgrade. I tried it just now and was able to successfully upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 with installed Avast 19.8. Therefore my suggestion is to disregard these errors unless you have other reasons to assume they are somehow related to your issue.

As for deleting those keys manually, it's possible provided that you have no Avast software installed (not just Antivirus) and you are running on Windows 7 and below:
- you need to delete mentioned registry keys (x86 and amd64)
- you need to delete corresponding files and directories in C:\Windows\WinSxs and C:\Windows\WinSxs\Manifests. You should find .manifest and .cat file and one directory that contain binaries for each registry key mentioned.

Still, I'd suggest to leave them behind. Usually, Windows 10 upgrade process takes care of them (depending on situation either fix them or remove them) for you.

Thanks for the swift response.

I was assuming that because I have eight errors in my CheckSUR log that my upgrade to Win 10 would fail.

I have already taken admin ownership of the four directories in winsxs and the eight .manifest and eight .cat files as shown in the screenshot in my original post. I was going to move these to a temp folder and delete the registry keys and see what happens when I run SURT.
I'm not quite sure about this statement "and one directory that contain binaries for each registry key mentioned" ? Where would I find this?

I can confirm that I am running Win 7 Home SP1 64 bit version.

I think the first thing to do is to try the upgrade to Win 10 first and see what happens.
Thanks for your assistance and I'll let you know the outcome.

Yes, basically those files and folders you found and mentioned in the first post. These are the directories I meant. You can find around 50 files inside each (msvcp140.dll, ...). For *policy* manifests there is no corresponding directory.

Let me know how the upgrade goes.

No joy :(
Upgrade from Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit to Win 10 fails with same error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 "The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.

I ran SFC /scannow came up with a long list of things fixed requiring a reboot. After this I ran SFCFix which indicated
SURT total detected corruption count: 8

Winsxs has the same Avast entries as before as does the registry.

So I think that over the weekend I might delete the winsxs entries and registry entries and see what happens.... unless anyone has any better ideas :)
Thanks for your help so far.

Just to give feedback, I have finally managed to upgrade to Win 10 with the help of the good folks at Sysnative.
There was a lot of ancient applications to remove (and registry fixes to apply) in addition to removing Avast. Such as
PC Probe II
REALTEK Wireless LAN Driver and Utility
Samsung Kies
Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones
ZoneAlarm LTD Toolbar
as well as my Printer, old creative soundcard & my Acronis backup software.

Great to hear that. I hope we'll be able to release fix of the CRT issues soon.
