Q&A on data selling thing? Questions below...
« on: February 04, 2020, 08:11:23 AM »
Mainly because I have questions to which no one seems to have answers and because people seem to be pretty much making up shit at this point all over the place. Here, on Reddit, MalwareTips forums etc Would be nice if avast! team answered them to clear some things up. Maybe some would see it as damage control, but I'd see it more as just clarifications on what was happening and what is the aftermath, who is really affected if at all and just knowing the specifics. I'm not even freaking out because I've had data sharing settings disabled since avast! v5 when these things started appearing in it and knowing I had them disabled, I'm not even affected by any of it. But I'm curious and would still like to know some things that were not answered anywhere so far...

Questions like:
  • How long was the data sharing dialog present during install (because I remember seeing it ages ago, but don't remember exactly)
  • How was data shared to 3rd parties, on request as aggregated results in graphs or raw data that 3rd parties could poke on their own?
  • People are saying you were selling their "browsing history". Web browser extensions were collecting basically entire chain of web sites and effectively browsing history. How was this then presented to Jumpshot clients? The same way it was collected and grouped under single user with anonymization filter ran over it (effectively having all browsing history linked, but not under easily identifiable username) or entirely de-grouped without a common data point like "user X"?
  • Was data only collected via web browser extensions or also Web Shield component?
  • Was "CommunityIQ" (cloud malware protection) data ever or at any point shared with Jumpshot? Asking because I did have this enabled.

Might have more questions as this discussion goes on and I understand more and maybe have more questions as a result. Would appreciate if they get answered.

Why you guys take down the jumpshot with immediate effect? If it's doing their job legally.

During all those years, both Avast and Jumpshot acted fully within legal bounds.

hI, your questions will not be answered by avast.
your questions and much more questions  to come in to this thread will be just there to day and will be gone to the next pages , unless you or the other keep the thread live.

The leak has been found out by other companies and blogs

Read more carefully and you'll find out that the "leak" exists in lots of places. Sharing is much more widely spread in other companies.

Wait and See.If you have any questions please post it here.

Lets not turn this into a free fire zone with speculation, etc.

Lets wait and see what response we get from Avast over and above what has already been given in the forums and various avast.blog information.

I have a multitude of questions but right now I'd like to know the answer to these two:

1. How long does AVAST and Jumpshot keep the data collected?

2. With Jumpshot closing down, what is AVAST doing with our Data? Selling it? Destroying it? Keeping it around?

The answer to question nr2 defines how honest they are with shutting down Jumpshot.

@ Mike ALA

You essentially have an answer to your questions in another topic (which by your subsequent comment you don't believe) https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=231828.msg1534875#msg1534875

So lets try to keep this topic on track with RejZoR's original post or it will just go the same way as other topics, a bit of a mess and no real answers.

Bob, do you work for Avast? Is there a press release or official statement where Avast talks about this?

They don't mention anything of what has been asked here and there's no mention of what Bob is saying.

Can you both tell your friends at Avast to address their users concerns in a new post here, or a blog post or anything other than through non affiliated forum users then? It would be wonderful. It won't bring me, nor my clients, back as a costumers but it will somewhat redeem what has been done.
