New browser version 80.0
« on: March 11, 2020, 07:30:43 PM »
Hello everyone,

We’re pleased to announce that we have released a new stable version of Avast Secure Browser (ASB) - version 80.0. This is our “Snowbird” release and has our new Anti-Phishing implementation. Which protects you even more from scams, phishing and malware. Any time you visit a page, we don't just scan the URL in the address bar: we take it one step further and use our Anti-Phishing AI technology, which utilizes our leading threat intelligent network, to scan every single URL that's loaded by that page — blocking scripts, iframes, trackers, and more to keep you even more secure.
It improves the amount of URLs being scanned, the malware detection ratio, and the performance stays the same. This is the first phase of Phalanx, our internal security architecture, and there is much more to come.

Some additional notes:
  • Updated: Header colour on the settings page
  • Updated: New Tab Page Doodle
  • Updated: Blocking pages design
  • Updated: No internet connection page design

You should get this new version automatically via update. Please be patient, the delivery of the update is gradual.
Link for downloading Avast Browser installer: https://www.avast.com/secure-browser#pc

We hope you enjoy the changes we’ve made, and as always we would love to hear your feedback.

Tried to open the browser today and got this message.

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.
Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I uninstalled and tried to reinstall but it does not work, so no secure browser at the moment.

What can I do?

Thanks
John

Maybe it's time for a clean install of the Secure Browser?
Download the installer from here, https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser
Download the Secure Browser Removal tool from here, https://download.avastbrowser.com/avast_secure_browser_uninstall.exe
Save your Bookmarks via the Book Marks Manager if you have custom bookmarks so you can import them when you re-install.
Uninstall Secure Browser via Programs and Features - Reboot
Run the removal tool, reboot, run the installer import your favorites if you saved them.
A video to help with the installation: https://youtu.be/r_VLA0HMLQM
Report back if that's solved the problem or not.
Avast has offered a seperate tool to totally remove the Secure Browser if the above instructions don't work.
You can find that tool here, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=230288.msg1531315#msg1531315

Using windows 10.

According to my research the problem is with Avast.  There is a fault with their software and it will not install.  I am not the only one who has had this problem with the same message given.
I believe they are working on this.

Hello jcm3,

I am sorry for your troubles. We have seen some occasional problems with installations and are working on resolving the problem.

Could you please enable the logging and share the logs with us to confirm if its the same issue?

How to collect logs:

I hope this is what you need?

4 files.  The last one is too big to post, being 1495.

Yes, in general there should also be AvastUpdate.log that we sometimes need, but this time i can confirm that it is the same issue.

Thanks for sharing and i hope we will be able to release the fix soon.

Hello,  I've just updated Avast Premium to 20.2.2401 (build 20.2.5130.565). I'm running windows 7 Pro.I am also using Avast Secureline VPN which is running at 22 mbps for downloads.

I did a repair on the installation of Avast Premium 20.2.2401 after Cleanup failed to launch. It now seems to be working as intended except for an issue with the browser.

Since the Avast Premium update I've had constant issues with Avast Secure Browser saying it can't connect because it has timed out. For example today, as soon as I clicked the "reply" button at the foot of this thread it gave me the error again (please see attached pic). It didn't even hang. the error message was instant. In most instances it will hang for a while. And it just happened again trying to view the preview!!!

The only change I made to the firewall since the update was to enable notification of port scanning. Is there something I have to reconfigure so that it works as it used to or is this a bug?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I still can't Secure Browser to import bookmarks from Chrome.
It was selected, and said it was done. I even did it twice but it never imports.
This is always the end result.

Something else that's apparently not working.  :(
I was told by Avast that the problem is being investigated.
