Web Based Email Acct and Avast
« on: March 15, 2020, 04:01:31 AM »
I am using a browser to access a web based email account and I use Avast Free Antivirus, so why should I be seeing this in my inbox?

(<)div
 id="?x?x?x?x-2DD7-?x?x-A1B8-4E2AA?x?x?x?"><br />
 <table style="border-top: 1px solid #D3D4DE;">
         <tr>
         <td style="width: 55px; padding-top: 13px;"><a
 href="https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon"
 target="_blank"><img
 src="https://ipmcdn.avast.com/images/icons/icon-envelope-tick-round-orange-animated-no-repeat-v1.gif"
 alt="" width="46" height="29" style="width: 46px; height: 29px;"
 /></a></td>
                 <td style="width: 470px; padding-top: 12px; color: #41424e;
 font-size: 13px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
 line-height: 18px;">Virus-free. <a
 href="https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link"
 target="_blank" style="color: #4453ea;">www.avast.com</a>
                 </td>
         </tr>
 </table><a href="#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2" width="1"
 height="1"></a></div(>)

I don't know if disabling those tags was necessary, but I wish for you can see it exactly as it appeared in the message I sent to someone, except for that '(<) and (>) in bold font.

The links were not hotlinks in the "sent" record at my end.

And that ID worried me, so I changed some characters to the '?x' combination.

Can anyone please explain why that was placed into some correspondence I sent out using electronic mail?

Thank you.

You can disable the mail signature in the settings.

Thank you for your post, Asyn.

I am afraid, though, there is something which I am quite confused about.

This:

"Scanning applies only to messages sent or received using a mail management software (email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird). If you access your web based email account via an internet browser, your PC is protected by other Shields."

I believe that many people, especially stupid people like myself, would assume from that statement from this company that this company does not involve itself in any webmail accounts.

That is why I made the point quite clear that I accessed that particular account using a browser and so it is what this company is identifying as we see in that quote from this company's page as a "web based email account" and so I wonder what this company is doing in that account if it is not conducting its business of scanning in that account?

I'll offer further thanks, Asyn, for any information you may be able to offer.

I assume that the abbreviation "devs" is referring to employees on some sort of development team, correct?

But you seem to be some sort of Support Team professional around here and so I become worried that you do not wish to address my question about what the company's software is doing in a location where it is not conducting the company's business of providing security?

You see, to the average person you give a very clear impression that there is something going on that even you are afraid to address.

There is also something else which I found a short time ago while doing some checking around here:

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=232538.msg1538495#msg1538495

February 28th, at 0836hrs my log shows the following:
(ver. 20.1.2397 - build 20.1.5069.528)

And I have the two necessary screen grabs to show when I was notified of the need to update the application and then the screen grab when I did the update.

Seems I have to jump through some hoops to be able to show the screen grabs, right?  Anyway, I do have the screen grabs.  Be assure of that.

You see, the funny code I posted above happened yesterday, which is obviously a number of weeks after I did the February 28th updating.  By the way, I do have the updating set at manual.

But more importantly it would seem, Asyn, some of your forum colleagues think that should not have been set as a default to allow that signature stuff, no matter what the company was doing in a location where they were not conducting any security related business.

Thank you.

When might I be able to expect them to show up here?

Are you able to ask for one of them to address my questions?

Okay.  Thank you.

Next question I have, and please excuse me for the many question; where do we see information from the company explaining that we have to set that signature thing ourselves?  I mean documentation from the company, especially for new customers first learning the ins-and-outs?

I don't know about the new setting that was stated in the other thread as having been changed; but I obviously had the earlier version, so what might I have missed in instructions for that particular setting?

Thank you for your patience with me as I try to understand this.

Unfortunately I have been spending lots of time in the hospital and then trying to catch up on all sorts of matters because of difficulty doing Net work in my room at the hospital, so I am way-way-way late with this observation; the "devs" never did show up here. That doesn't seem so polite.

Did I write something that was so wrong they decided to ignore my concerns about what happened?

Was I impolite in something I wrote in this thread that would cause them to place this thread in their trash bin?

Hi,

In webmail, the signature is actually added by Web Shield. When you use webmail, Web Shield is scanning the web content and attachments for malware and that's why the signature is added.
We are currently working on a new feature that will scan emails in the cloud - Email Guardian. However, it is still in the testing phase, available in Beta only.

I think I understand, and thank you for the answer. But, to be straight with you, I'll have to properly brief myself again on this issue because I'm not doing so great in the memory department due to the chemo therapy for the relapse. But I always keep good notes and so studying the notes won't be so hard. Just have to find the time. Still, I appreciate the response.

By the way, interesting account ID you have there. Just how vast are you? Are you a complete continent, like maybe Australia?
