Isn't raising a pint of beer to someone suffering because of beer a slap in the face ???
If you've lost someone to the irresponsible choice a drunk driver made I am truly sorry for the pain you feel.

But a glass of beer with friends, people who are responsible for their actions and restrained enough to refrain from driving drunk, is not the cause of your pain.   Nor is it the manifestation of hatred we saw on 9/11.

I found the following poem by Charles M. Province, and thought it was fitting as a tribute to this solemn date.

It's the Soldier

A protest raged on a courthouse lawn,
Round a makeshift stage they charged on,
Fifteen hundred or more they say,
Had come to burn a Flag that day.
A boy held up the folded Flag,
Cursed it, and called it a rag.
An old man pushed through the angry crowd,
With a rusty shotgun shouldered proud.

His uniform jacket was old and tight,
He had polished each button, shiny and bright.
He crossed that stage with a soldier's grace
Until he and the boy stood face to face.

"Freedom of speech," the old man said,
"Is worth dying for, good men are dead,
So you can stand on this courtyard lawn.
But before any Flag gets burned today,
This old man is going to have his say!

My father died on a foreign shore,
In a war they said would end all war.
But Tommy and I wasn't even full grown
Before we fought in a war of our own.
And Tommy died on Iwo Jima's beach
In the shadow of a hill he couldn't quite reach,
Where five good men raised his Flag so high
That the whole world could see it fly.

I got this bum leg that I still drag
Fighting for this same old Flag.
No there's but one shot in this old gun,
So now it's time to decide which one,
Which one of you will follow our lead,
To stand and die fow what you believe?
For sure as there is a rising sun,
You'll burn before this Flag burns, son."

Now this riot never come to pass.
The crowd got quiet and that can of gas
Got set aside as they walked away
To talk about what they had heard this day.
And the boy who had called it a dirty rag,
Haded the soldier the folded Flag.

So the battle of the Flag this day was won
By a tired old soldier with a rusty gun,
Who for one last time, had to show to some,
This Flag may fade, yet these colors don't run.

I'll never forget it.

I was getting coffee for my friend who was about to leave for work at a local coffee shop when the girl behind the counter said that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade center in New York so I went back and switched the TV to CNN and watched in total awe for the rest of the day.

At first I thought it was one of the War of the World type hoaxes and I switched to CBC and the news was the same so I switches back to CNN.

I like Enya.

I will never forget the calls (very early on the west coast of the US) from my staff to say there had been an incident.  They had initiated remote backups of our servers in the buildings - tragically as our co-workers lost their lives.  Their reports on our servers to me continued until the collapse of the buildings as I was watching on CNN - by then our servers counted for nothing.

While I will never forget the loss of my co-workers in New York nor can I ignore the loss of innocent lives in Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Madrid and London.

This tiny planet has to find a better way.

It will live with me just like the day when John Kennedy was shot and I was in high school in Electronics class listening to a radio I was working on with my WWII headphones and I asked the teacher if he had heard the news so we all started to listen in.

If would certainly be nice if this volatile world would learn to live in peace. It really isn't hard.
All you need is a little tolerance and understanding of one another. Try it sometime, you'll be surprised how good it makes you feel.

Seems we, humans, never learn... It's unbelievable.

On Sunday we'll be remembering the 15th Anniversary of 9/11/2001.
Unfortunately, the world is still not at peace. A little prayer toward that end and in remembrance
of that terrible day 15 years ago would certainly help.
