Avast installation stops computer working properly

When I install my licenced version of Avast Internet Security it causes problems with the Windows 10 start menu and other software preventing things from loading. If I uninstall avast everything returns to normal. Why does this happen and what can be done about it?

- Which version/build of Avast..?
- OS..? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP/Build..?)
- Other security related software installed..?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?
