Help with Default Settings?
« on: September 05, 2006, 12:12:19 AM »
I origionally posted this in the general category and was not able to get a response. I think this category may be more appropriate.

What are the default settings for the Standard Shield advanced tab? There is a list of items shown that will not be scanned. Also should I check all of the blocked operations on the blocker tab or leave them unchecked? I have them check now and I am always getting blocked warnings.

Also on the Web Shield Exceptions tab, there are several MIME types excluded.

This is how it is now set up. Are these default settings?

STANDARD SHIELD ADVANCED Settings:(items that will not be scanned)

?:\PAGEFILE.SYS
*.TXT
*.LOG
*.INI
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.MANIFEST
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.CAT
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.POLICY
*\EDB.CHK

Web Shield seetings, MIME exceptions.

image/png
text/css
video/*

Thank you for any assistance.

I would be better if you stay in the first thread you've opened...
I think I have already tried to post the answer. For me, it will double the effort to help  8)

Thanks for looking at my post. I checked my original post and there are no replies. Although  my question may not be suitable for this forum, at least I did get a reply. Still looking forward to some help however.

Thank you.

Thanks for looking at my post. I checked my original post and there are no replies.
I apologize for my mistake. I thought I've answered this.

What are the default settings for the Standard Shield advanced tab?
Seems to be only

?:\PAGEFILE.SYS
*.TXT
*.LOG
*.INI
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.TMP
*\_AVAST4_\UNP*.TMP
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.MANIFEST
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.CAT
C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\*.POLICY
*\EDB.CHK

Also should I check all of the blocked operations on the blocker tab or leave them unchecked? I have them check now and I am always getting blocked warnings.
You shouldn't check any. This is an 'old' avast feature that is not suitable for most users.
Look at the default window.

Also on the Web Shield Exceptions tab, there are several MIME types excluded.

Yes  ;)

Thanks! Very helpful. Especially with the screen shots!
One more question. Should I add the 2 additional lines:
 C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.TMP
*\_AVAST4_\UNP*.TMP
that you have listed to what I have listed?
It doesn't seem like there are any problems other than the warnings because of the checked boxes that I will now clear.

Well, at least the second is advisable.
I have the as default in a clean avast installation...
The first one, well, you can let it there but, maybe, some virus could be 'detected' more than once and bring some trouble to the user.

It doesn't seem like there are any problems other than the warnings because of the checked boxes that I will now clear.
Behavior Blocker is an old feature and it's usefullness is very limited in today's Windows environment (it may be best to remove it completely). It is a blocker of suspicious behavior (thus preventing an unknown virus to spread or perform its payload). It's not good as a protector of system files or a 'parent' monitor (an application that start another one).

Okay, thanks for the help. Strange that those 2 lines were missing in my installation though. So you recomend adding the line:
*\_AVAST4_\UNP*.TMP
but not:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.TMP to the list. Correct?

I think you don't have to add anything to the list; the mentioned paths are included internally in the program, no matter if they show up in the list of exclusions or not.
