And The Best Antivirus Is… (According to www.virus.gr)
« on: September 05, 2006, 05:51:57 PM »
Quite interesting. Why is AOL virus shield right next to Kaspersky? This is surprising.

Quote
The test was made on 15-25 August 2006, using Windows XP Professional SP1 on a P4 2800 Mhz, 512MB DDRAM.

All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc. The default settings of each program were not used, in order for each program to achieve its maximum detection rate. Because of this, there is a possibility for the tested programs to detect a few false positives.

Now why would they use an outdated operating system ???  Why SP1 and not SP2 ???

What's the sense to test both versions of avast! (Home and Pro), everyone knows that both versions has the same scanning capabilities (same detection rates)  ???

This "test" is flawed all along, so those few duplicit entries are really insignificant.

I know I don't like to see avast! not in the 10 top either. But why is it not, is this test rigged?  :o

Detecting viruses is only part of what an antivirus program does, the other part is dealing with them when they are discovered and this is where I think Avast scores over other programs.

Igor can you tell how this test is flawed?

Completely :P
If nothing else, the selection of samples is wrong. It isn't an easy thing to do; you can't take a few antivirus programs and call anything detected by at least one of them a virus. This way:
1. The programs used for such selections get an immediate advantage
2. You are ignoring the viruses that the other A/V programs detect and the selected groups doesn't
3. Any false positive (or corrupted sample), detected by one of the selected A/Vs, is immediatelly counted as a loss for the other ones. So, the testbed may actually be a big folder of garbage here.

You can't get meaningful results from flawed samples...

Igor, this is ridiculous, I mean... people are laughing at the user, they must be joking with us that can't 'see' the wrong methodology as we're not virus analyst experts.
As we have a rogue page for antispywares, we must have a rogue page for antivirus tests.  ::)
