The avast updater, in the current release, already runs at "Below normal" priority.

I'm looking at mine 4.7.871 and the aswUpdSv.exe is on Normal in task manager.

Sorry David, I was imprecise.  For me too aswUpdSv.exe is at Normal priority, but it really does nothing much and consumes very little resources. 

I was speaking of the actual update functions that perform the update once it has been determined that an update is needed - at least for the regular VPS updates. I have not monitored a program update - but that is so infrequent and usually requires a system restart and its priority hardly seems worth worrying about.

It is really noticeable, hehe.
When I am doing things with my computer and I see that my system gets slow I am always almost sure it is that avast! update. Then I go to my kerio 2.1.5 firewall log and for sure, it was avast!

Nothing else slows my system so much as that VPS update check, but it only happens once in every 4 hours and takes only maybe 10 seconds or less, so not a very big upset.
But it sure is noticeable by big time

I just monitored an update check on my system.  There was a brief spike of CPU utilization lasting less than two seconds and, since my VPS is up to date, nothing else. 

Like others, I find that my system is notceably sluggish when an actual VPS update is in progress.  As Vlk has mentioned before though, running a process at lower priority does nothing to the priority of I/O operations performed by that process.

I notice sluggish example when watching videos with my videoplayer. Of course i can set videoplayer CPU priority to higher.

Also there should be easy and quick way to stop update service. Or update service should stop same time when i stop Standard Shield.

Just run:
net stop "avast! iAVS4 Control Service"

Why don't you set the Virus Database and Program updates to manual (Program Settings, Update (Basic)) and you won't be troubled at all by it, you must then do regular manual updates at a time that is convenient to you.
