Avast blocks WinPatrol installation
« on: September 07, 2006, 07:28:44 PM »
I thought this was a quirk the first time it happened but now it's occurred twice in the past week.

Setting up two new, out of the box computers with the normal stuff:  avast!, Ewido, Ad-Aware, Sbybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, etc.  When it came time to install WinPatrol the installation processed stopped midway with no explanation.  This happened with multiple attempts, after reboots, on both machines.

The problem was resolved by turning off all avast! providers (turning off just the Standard Shield did not work).  Both computers have the default avast! installation with no blocked operations checked in the behavior blocker and "Allow the operation ..." checked if avast! can't ask what to do.  Everything except WinPatrol was installed without  any problems.

Just thought I would post this in case anyone else runs into a similar problem.

Because Winpatrol checks so many items, it makes avast! check a lot of files
and therefore it takes a very long time to do the install.
I generally pause the standard shield before installing or, updating Winpatrol.

Just remember to turn the shield back on when the install is done.

I would have thought that by now you would know avast doesn't do blocking, so it has to be some form of conflict. I have no idea why any other avast provider would become involved as the only provider that should scan installed content would be standard shield.

There is obviously some sort of conflict, finding that is the tricky bit and I don't know if it has to do with the fact that winpatrol is another security program and there may be a driver conflict. I have never used winpatrol so I don't know if it installs drivers or checks for other processes, etc.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Strange?!
I've done a clean Windows installation last week.
WinPatrol, for sure, was the 'last' antispyware tool installed...
Everything ok  ::) 8)

But I did turn the standard shield off ...

That was the point I was trying to make but my choice of words was not the best.

No, they were a little more after tax and a printer cable.  ;D

Strange?!

Never happened before to me either.  I guess I'm just lucky.
