Hi, new Avast version 20.3 is here
(20.3.2405)

These are the official program release notes:
✓ New alerts - Get alerted when new devices join your network (Useful for catching both hackers and freeloading neighbors)
✓ More privacy - You now have the option to be protected from shady websites even in browsers that use the DoH protocol to encrypt the Domain Name System (DNS). Premium Security users can turn this on in their Real Site settings
✓ Improved Wi-Fi Inspector - We've updated your Wi-Fi Inspector so that it's a lot more stable

How to install:

1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program

2. Or you can download and install from here:

Online installers (recommended):
Free: https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_FREE
Premium Security (formerly Premier): https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR

!
AVAST Team

When I opened Avast Premium Security, it told me the definitions are out of date. That's odd because it is set to do automatic updates and always has. But I pressed the red UPDATE button, and it showed me the back and forth line for about an hour and nothi ng. Below that was a message also in red that my program is out of date, but it wouldn't let me press that UPDATE button. My program, also, is set for auto updates. It never does. In the meantime, there was no way to stop the update for definitions even though it wasn't updating.

So I came to this forum and found this post to update manually. I downloaded from the link above (Premium Security (formerly Premier): https://bits.avcdn.net/insttype_APR). I opened the EXE file and got the back and forth line. That was hours ago, and  it's still going.

What the heck?

No, it was for him. Since Avast dropped support for windows 8.* and below, they won't get more definitions updates.

I think you're confusing version of program and version of Windows.
The support for Avast versions 5 - 8 (released in years 2010 - 2013) was dropped, yes.
In Avast version 19, the support for Windows XP and Vista was dropped - i.e. Avast 19/20 cannot be installed on those operating systems.
However, the latest Avast 20.3 still supports Windows 7 and higher.

You're right, when reading, I just assumed 8.* was for windows. My bad.

Back to my problem. Yes, I'm using Win 10 and need to update my Avast Premium Security.

When I opened Avast Premium Security, it told me the definitions are out of date. That's odd because it is set to do automatic updates. But I pressed the red UPDATE button, and it showed me the back-and-forth line (for lack of a better description) for about an hour and nothing.

I opened the EXE file and got the back-and-forth line. That was hours ago, and  it's still going.

And it's evil! I suspect this is my culprit right here. I bought Ultimate the first week of March and not had any issues with it until a few weeks ago when it decided my VPN was the devil and it was on and has been ever since. It was a little entertaining at first watching them go at it and some of the tricks the VPN would pull out to outmaneuver it. Well not at first Avast simply blocked and it was end game until I stepped in and gave it all allow in the firewall (which I could swear were already there as well as 5 bar access), added it to exceptions, created a backup start up service Avast would block and more. That's when the entertainment part started because Avast did not care that I approved and kept going after it but now the vpn could get started even when the background start up failed because the other did not. It was interesting watching the tactics until Avast went off the deep end and decided if it could not get the vpn then everything was fair game so I had to fix all my browsers in the firewall which avast decided auto -decide meant block and put them on the exceptions list. One allow again one would always be changed back to ask just to get the last word in and delay every webpage request waiting for it to take it's sweet time to ask. Many a captcha would fail because I was unaware We were playing this time and after I answered they would reply they were unable to reach it and bail on me. Shortly afterwards avast would come casually strolling in and ask if I wanted to give the dearly departed permission to access the Internet. That's when I finally had to write support and ask them how to stop this evil out of control child.
