Need an overview
« on: September 08, 2006, 11:31:32 AM »
since the norton internet security is expiring in 12 days ( came with the lapop ) I have a checklist of the firewall and virus protection so far:

Avast or AVG
Comodo free firewall
Jetico
I also have spyware terminator, adware se, spyware blaster, spybot.

Since I have been hearing comodo is so good I was wondering if anyone has opinions before I download it. Thanks.

firewall issues have been discussed numerous...try doing a search...in addition...i reckon you should remove any traces from symantec thoroughly using..

avast for sure  8)

Comodo free firewall or Jetico
Comodo in my opinion. More flexible. Updates frequently. Forum support.

I also have spyware terminator, adware se, spyware blaster, spybot.
Keep all of them  8)

I would support that but add the proviso not to have the ClamAV integration with spyware terminator (as Tech reminded me earlier ;D) as that effectively would be two resident AV installed on the same system which can cause conflicts.
Quote
# Antivirus Integration - Spyware Terminator allows users to integrate an open-source antivirus program, ClamAV, in order to extend the ability to detect malicious programs both during the scan and within the Real-time Shield. Updates of the antivirus database are downloaded automatically with Spyware Terminator updates.

They won't conflict, avast and ClamWin, and you won't have troubles as the way ClamWin signatures are used to scan.
Of course, you'll have resources being used, but this is another history  ;)

Because ClamWin is an on-demand scanner, however they are trying to do something different with this integration, read the quote again, "allows users to integrate an open-source antivirus program, ClamAV, in order to extend the ability to detect malicious programs both during the scan and within the Real-time Shield."

 :)  Hi Mazza :

Since you have SpywareBlaster, it would be best to
uninstall Spybot because : 1) Its Updates MAY "reverse"
      some of SpywareBlaster's "protection" ; 2 ) Its quality
has fallen off recently . Better to have the good & FREE
     "Ewido" from www.ewido.net/en .
AND better to replace "Spyware terminator", with its
      Developers "checkered past" with SUPERantispyware
      ( FREE ver ) from www.superantispyware.com, who's
Developer does NOT have a "checkered past"; there
is a thread in our "General" forum on the "Terminator".

Spiritsongs,
You made this comment:

I have had both applications for quite a while.  How would I know if Spybot was reversing Spywareblaster's protection?  Usually Spybot doesn't find anything anyway, but many seem to say it is a good app to have. ??? ???

I also use Ewido to scan once a week.

I used to use Spybot, it is still installed but mot updated and used.
I got tired of having problems with the update.
Also it uses a lots of CPU when scanning, freezes my over heating CPU.

So I use lavasofts one and sometimes scan with a2 online scanner too. and kaspersky online scan etc.

I never liked teatimer taking so much resources and bad popups.

Comodo Firewall is a GREAT firewall, and it works very well with Avast! No problems here at all.

Spybot & SpywareBlaster

 :)  Hi Ro Ro :

The best way to know IF Spybot's Updates are
"disabling" some of SpywareBlaster's "Items" is
to go to SpywareBlaster's GUI AFTER a Spybot
Update and see if it says something more than
"0 items have protection disabled" in either of the
       top 2 lines !?

Is there any way to prevent this to occur? :-\
